An awning retractable by being wound onto a roller and associated with legs permitting it to be maintained in position above the area to be sheltered when unrolled. The roller (1) is hollow, and the legs (2, 3) of the awning, which are foldable so that in the folded state their length is about one-half that of the roller, are adapted to fit into the roller when the awning is rolled up. Instead of being permanently attached to a mounting wall for the awning, the roller is preferably fastened to the free edge of the awning so that it accompanies the unrolling thereof.

RETRACTABLE AWNING AND WINDOW FRAME ASSEMBLY

An awning assembly includes a frame having a U-shaped recess, and first and second support arms having first end portions pivotably mounted within the recess. The assembly further includes a shaft, and an awning supported on the shaft. The first and second support arms have second end portions connected to the awning or to the shaft. The awning is movable by the support arms between a retracted position and an extended position. When the awning is in the retracted position, the awning is in a rolled-up or collapsed configuration and the second end portions of the support arms and the awning are disposed within the recess. When the awning is moved from the retracted position to the extended position, the second end portions of the support arms pivot out of the recess and unfurl the awning.

AWNING EXTENSION AND RETRACTION APPARATUS

An awning extension and retraction apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus is adaptable to being powered by an electrical motor if desired. Left and right support arms are carried by a low position on a supporting wall, and provide telesco ping inner and outer support arms. These arms move from a vertical orientation when the awning is retracted, to an angular position when the awning is extended. Hinged lef t and right rafter arms are carried by an upper position on a supporting wall, and provi de an inner rafter arm adjacent to the supporting wall, and an outer rafter arm connecte d to a roller tube supporting the awning fabric. The inner and outer rafter arms are conne cted at a mid-point by an elbow joint allowing them to extend from a folded position w hen the awning is retracted to an extended, locked position when the awning is exten ded.

MOTOR OPERATED AWNING

An automatic retractable awning assembly includes a roller, a flexible canopy rollable on the roller and having an inner edge for connection to a wall and an outer edge secured to the roller, a torsion spring operably connected to a first end of the roller to bias the roller to roll the canopy onto the roller, a pair of arm assemblies supporting opposite ends of the roller and operable to move the roller between a retracted position adjacent the wall and an extended position spaced from the wall, and an electric motor operably connected to a second end of the roller with a gear train to selectively rotate the roller in either direction. Each of the arm assemblies include a vertically extending base arm for connection to the wall, a bottom arm having a first end pivotally connected to the base arm, an extended arm having a first end pivotally connected to the bottom arm and a second end connected to and supporting the roller, a top arm having a first end pivotally connected to the base arm above the bottom arm and a second end pivotally connected to the extended arm, and a gas compression spring extending between the base arm and the top arm for outwardly biasing the arm assembly toward the extended position.

The frame for a sun awning which can be rolled up, has a mounting or supporting bar assembly comprising two tubular components forming extensions of each other. In these there slide the ends of an intermediate component giving telescopic adjustment of the overall length of the bar assembly. The three components are locked together in the selected position, and are secured by brackets or other suitable devices to the wall. A winding spindle which turns between two brackets fixed to the bar ends, has two end components and a sliding intermediate one to adjust the overall length and to lock to them. An adaptor on the intermediate component forms a smooth surface with the end ones, onto which the awning is wound. A third assembly actuates the awning and is similarly constructed to the first two, being adjustable for length and lockable at the desired setting.

A mechanism is disclosed for assisting an operator of a retractable awning in lifting the awning to a desired elevation. The mechanism includes a pair of back-to-back gas spring units which are operatively connected to relatively sliding telescoping members of a support arm for the awning to bias the support arm outwardly in a direction to assist in lifting the awning into a desired orientation. In one embodiment of the mechanism, a compression spring is provided in axial alignment with the gas spring units to provide an elongated stroke for additional assistance in attaining abnormal elevation of the awning.
