A method for joining flat panels, e.g. flooring panels, has the adjoining edge of the panels with profiled grooves. An elastic linking profile strip (8) is clipped between the grooves and has at least one flange (10) which grips behind a retaining profile (12) to secure the strip against external forces. The strip grips the two grooves and prevents lateral and vertical displacement. The elastic profile can be unclipped by a tilt and pull action on one of the panels.
