The core is provided with key channel and is spring-loaded by slides so that if the key channel is free of authorized key locking slide extensions are inserted in locking groove formed in member in which locking cylinder core is rotationally installed. If authorized key is installed in the key channel the locking slide extensions does not project from cylinder core outline. Locking groove sides expand in axial direction of cylinder core detachment from output link. The lock has a rotor (2) that rotates in a bore in the lock body stator (1). The rotor has a longitudinal hole for a notched key. The hole has transverse grooves (7) crossing the longitudinal hole. A plate mounted in each groove is spring-biased to extend outwardly from the rotor. Each plate has an opening to allow passage of the key with the key notches co-operating with an edge of each opening. The plates are completely retracted into continuous annular recesses (8) in the stator bore by the passage of the correct notch combination on the key. The rear of the rotor has a projection (11), which co-operates with a rotary drive (9) of a lock catch. The drive is returned by a spring. The front face of the drive has a recess (14), which co-operates with a stop finger (13) to allow translation of the drive only until the finger is released. An abutment (15) moves about a fixed angle against the recess.

The box can now be pushed axially in to engage and rotate a lantern, the assembly inc. security mechanisms which prevent both rotation and retraction of the box when at repose. A round hollow section mounting spigot with external and internal radial flanges may house into the inboard housing extremity, the internal flange being notched to locate cut and folded radial box wall wings. This arrangement prevents box rotation, the location of the wings in the notches being ensured by a coil spring which bears on an inboard centring washer to force the box towards the keyhole. Box retraction may be prevented by locating the washer behind a housing bore shoulder.

Insertion of a key 20, urges the tumbler towards the housing so that the tapered end 41 of the tumbler enters the space between the outer surface of the barrel 12 and the inner surface of the housing 33. As the barrel moves into the housing, the tumbler then rotates so that it can clear the formation 34 provided on the housing. Once clear of the formation, the tumbler latches into space 37 and prevents the barrel returning to its original position until the key is withdrawn. The tumbler may be spring biassed [Figs. 8 and 9]. The cylindrical lock may be connected to a steering lock device to serve as a secondary latching device to prevent the steering lock becoming engaged whilst the key is in the barrel.
