[Also in Division A4] In a security device for a drawer, door or the like, the drawer mounting casing is provided with a U-section frame 1 supporting a rod 4 rotatable in end bearings by a lever 13 linked to a solenoid plunger connected into an alarm circuit. Slidable on the rod against a surrounding spring 16 is a tubular latch device 12 provided with a spring 18 having hooked ends 20, 21 and a catch 11 protruding into the path of but in front of a projection 3 attached to the back of the drawer. When the solenoid is deenergised the drawer is manually pulled open whereby the projection loads the spring via catch 11 until hook 21 engagese on lug 22 on lever 13 and holds the latch and spring cocked so that the drawer may be freely opened and closed. Should the alarm circuit energise the solenoid, its plunger is first drawn half-way in so that lug 22 releases hook 21 and the spring forces latch 11 against projection 3 to close the drawer. The solenoid then moves the plunger fully in and rotates the rod and a lug 14 at its inner end into the path of the hook 20 to lock the drawer closed. In another embodiment the spring surrounds a fixed tube around the rod and the latch and projections are provided with sound deadening pads. The spring may be replaced by a fluid, electric or magnetic power device.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The release mechanism of an electronic timelock employs two bistable electromagnetic actuators to control the ''on-guard'' and ''off-guard'' conditions of the lock, each actuator comprising an element of ferro-magnetic material whose magnetic polarity serves as the ''memory'' of whether the lock is in an on- or off-guard period and which polarity is reversed by single magnetising pulses through associated coils when each successive on- and off-guard period is programmed to commence. More particularly, when on-guard the coils are pulsed in one direction to magnetise the actuating elements so that they are attracted by specified poles of associated field magnets. In this condition the actuating elements block a beam which is pivotted centrally to a bolt which in turn blocks a bar which is attached to the door's boltwork. When off-guard the coils are pulsed in the opposite direction to reverse the magnetisation of the actuating elements so that they are attracted by the other poles of the associated magnets. This enables the beam to be lifted with the bolt as a spring snib on the bolt rides up a notch in the aforesaid bar when the latter is retracted. If the bar is forced when the mechanism is locked the snib is turned until a face on the bar is blocked by the bolt, thus limiting the force which can be applied through the beam to the actuating elements. If one actuator should for any reason fail in the on-guard position the lock can still be released when the other actuator switches to the off-guard position, by pivotal movement of the beam.

A pin lock is movably mounted for linear movement along a longitudinal axis. A magnet, preferably a permanent magnet, is mounted for limited rotation between the pin extended and pin retracted positions. An electromagnet provides a controllable electromagnetic field which encompasses at least a portion of the permanent magnet. A ferromagnetic latch is located within the magnetic field of the mounted magnet in each of the pin extended and pin retracted positions. A mechanical interconnection between the pin lock and the permanent magnet for moving the pin lock when the permanent magnet is rotated wherein said movement extends or retracts the pin lock between its pin extended and pin retracted positions. Reversing the electromagnetic field of the electromagnet serves to rotate the magnet so that the pin lock moves from one to the other of said two positions.
