The casing and tensioning device extend around the piston rod in the spring and when they are subjected to a load they expand the rod elastically. The dimensions of the tensioning device are chosen so that it can withstand a limited overload, above which the casing disengages from the piston. The spring comprises a cylindrical piston and an extendable piston rod normally secured to a door frame and door wing respectively. The casing extends around at least part of the rod and is secured to the outer end of the latter. The casing is engaged with the piston in a first position so that the rod is prevented from being inserted into the piston and in a second position it is disengaged from the piston. An elastically resilient tensioning device acts upon the casing as it moves from the first position to the second.

An assembly , comprising:a cylinder;a piston; anda lock transitionable between an unlocked position that permits extension and retraction of the piston relative to the cylinder, and a locked position that limits retraction of the piston relative to the cylinder, the lock blocked from transitioning from the locked to the unlocked position when a load supported by the piston exceeds a threshold load.2. The assembly of claim 1 , comprising a spring of the lock that is in a clamped position where the spring is clamped against the piston when the lock is in the locked position claim 1 , and is an unclamped position where the spring is unclamped from the piston when the lock is in the unlocked position.3. A door stop device for a motor-vehicle door contains, as is known, a piston/cylinder unit (1) which is fixed on the one hand to a door-side mounting and on the other hand to a mounting located on the door-frame side, its piston (15) limiting at least one working chamber (17). Connected to the working chamber is an external fluid conduit (20), in which an activatable shut-off member (21) is located. The one-sided piston rod which, in a known device, is provided with an additional inner valve necessitates unequal displacement volumes during shifts of the piston and therefore the closed fluid system has to be filled with a sufficient proportion of a compressible working fluid. In the new door stop device, in every possible piston position, the at least one working chamber in the cylinder (7) of the piston/cylinder unit, together with the connected fluid conduit (20), is filled with an incompressible fluid completely free of fractions of compressible fluid. This allows an essentially rigid stopping of the door against further opening or closing in any desired door position in a manner free of any elastic hysteresis. An festgesetztem Rundmaterial verwendet können linear bewegt Gegenstände (z. B. Tischhöhenverstellung) arretiert werden. Gelöst wird die Klemmung ohne zusätzliche Hebel. Dadurch ist die Vorrichtung einhandtauglich. Wenige Bauteile ergeben äußerst günstige Herstellungskosten. Zwei Raststangenführungen, mit jeweils 2 abgeschrägten Schaltzähnen und dem Federringlager, sind in einem Gehäuse (z. B. Rohr), montiert. Der Abstand der Schaltzähne entspricht dem benötigten Schaltweg. Eine Führung hat den Schaltzahn mit der Auflageschulter und gegenüber den Schaltzahn mit der Auflagenase. Auf der montierten Raststange ist die Klemmscheibe, zwischen den Schaltzähnen, mittels beidseitig aufgeschobener Federringen (z. B. O-Ringen), fixiert. Nach dem Schalten kann der tiefe Ausschnitt über die Nase kippen, dadurch die Raststange festsetzen. Unterstützt wird der Vorgang durch die Federringe. Anwendung finde diese Vorrichtung in Möbelklappen, Motorhauben, Dahlüftern, Backskisten.

A lid stay comprises a cylinder A and piston B provided with means whereby air can flow freely past the piston in one direction only, the cylinder A having an air escape hole J controlled by an adjustable pressure release valve M comprising a resilient pad disposed in a chamber L2 into which the hole J opens, and adjusting means L for controlling the force of a spring N bearing on the pad M. In the construction shown, the piston B comprises a cupleather. It may however comprise a piston having a non-return valve. The chamber L2 is formed by a screw-threaded cap L enaging a threaded stem in which is formed the hole J. Alternatively the stem J2 may be hollowed out to form the chamber L2 which may be internally screwthreaded to receive a plug for adjusting the spring N. As applied to the lid of a cabinet, the piston rod C and cylinder A are connected to the relatively moving parts by means of a pivot pin on the end of the piston rod, Fig. 1 (not shown), and trunnion pins on the end of the cylinder. In operation, the cap L is adjusted so that valve M prevents escape of air from the cylinder when the piston B is bearing only the weight of the lid. Only a small additional force is thus necessary to close the lid.
