A flapper valve for a surface controlled, sub-surface safety valve has a seat and a curved flapper. The seat has a seating rim, and the curved flapper has a sealing rim and can pivot relative to the seat. The flapper's sealing rim corresponds in shape to the seating rim. Both rims have lobes disposed outside a circular perimeter. Also, the undulating edges of the rims have corresponding outcroppings and incroppings. When a flow tube moves towards or away from the flapper, the flapper's lobes protect the flapper's sealing rim as the flapper's inside surface engages the moving flow tube. Moreover, the rims can have a groove and a ridge that engage one another when the rims close.

For wellbore fluid treatment, sliding sleeves deploy on tubing in a wellbore annulus. Operators deploy a plug down the tubing to a first sleeve. The plug seats in this first sleeve, and pumped fluid pressure opens the first sleeve and communicates from the tubing to the wellbore annulus. In the annulus, the fluid pressure creates a pressure differential between the wellbore annulus pressure and a pressure chamber on second sleeves on the tubing. The resulting pressure differential opens the second sleeves so that fluid pressure from the tubing can communicate through the second open sleeves. Using this arrangement, one sleeve can be opened in a cluster of sleeves without opening all of them at the same time. The deployed plug is only required to open the fluid pressure to the annulus by opening the first sleeve. The pressure chambers actuate the second sleeves to open up the tubing to the annulus.

An opening bias system utilizes a combination of a first less stiff spring and a second stiffer spring. Reversible decoupling means disconnects and reconnects the second spring at a short travel distance from the normally open position of the ball, white the first spring always provides opening bias forces to the ball. The pressure induced force required to fully close the ball valve following decoupling of the second spring is more than the force required to overcome the combination of the first and second springs.

The tool also includes a valve structure disposed within the bore, the valve structure comprising a disposable plug seat, the disposable plug seat comprising a first natural rock material. The disposable tool may also include a disposable plug in fluid sealing engagement with the seat, the plug comprising a second natural rock material, the plug and the plug seat comprising a plug valve. The first and second natural rock materials may include sedimentary rock, such as various forms of limestone, including Carrara marble or Indiana limestone.

A method for treating a well includes positioning a seat within the well that is capable of catching an obstruction which will prevent flow of fluid downstream of the seat. According to one embodiment of the invention, the seat is formed by expanding a sleeve with a ring positioned around its periphery or as a subsequent step in the process. As the sleeve is expanded over the ring, the seat is formed. Once the seat is formed, an obstruction in the form of a ball or dart is dropped down to the seat. In another embodiment the sleeve acts as a stop for a secondary valve seat which catches the obstruction. The casing uphole of the seat is perforated so that fluid under pressure will enter the formation surrounding the perforations. The process is particularly useful for fracing a formation in a horizontal well where numerous stages are required to complete the stimulation of the well. There is also potential application in vertical wells.

A downhole drilling valve tool, positioned above the drill bit, which utilizes a ball valve having a through bore for normal flow. The ball valve is operated bidirectionally by a piston driven mechanism between an open position and a closed position. The piston mechanism is responsive to a reference accumulator pressure on a first side and the pressure in the apparatus bore above the ball valve on a second side. Whenever the valve apparatus is lowered at least a minimum distance into the well bore, a pressure relief valve is used to maintain a fixed margin between the flowing bore pressure and the accumulator pressure. Closure of the ball valve occurs when the accumulator pressure exceeds the bore pressure during pump stoppages. The downhole drilling valve tool offers a more wear resistant sealing means, as well as higher pressure operability than conventional downhole check valves.

Characterizing low-permeability reservoirs by using numerical models of short-time well test data

Systems and methods include a computer-implemented method for characterizing low-permeability reservoirs by using numerical models. A numerical model modeling production of a well is prepared using reservoir data and well data. The numerical model is updated, including adjusting numerical model properties, until results of performing a quality assurance/quality control check indicate that the numerical model is within acceptable limits. Pressure derivatives are extracted from a transient test to create a functional numerical model. Simulations are run on the functional numerical model and reservoir features and properties are adjusted until acceptable results are achieved on: 1) a pressure match between pressures modeled in the functional numerical model and transient pressures of the well, and 2) a log-log plot derivative match between a pressure derivative of the functional numerical model and a pressure derivative of the transient pressures of the well. A simulation output that is based on the simulations is provided.
