In one embodiment, a positive control reciprocating sleeve valve system for use with an internal combustion engine includes opening and closing rockers controlled by corresponding opening and closing cam lobes. The IMEP determination module determines an IMEP for a combustion cycle of a cylinder of an engine based on squares of first and second ones of the engine speeds during the combustion cycle. The stuck mechanism indicator module selectively diagnoses a fault in a variable valve lift (VVL) mechanism of the cylinder based on the IMEP.

A system for diagnosing malfunctions in a variable valve actuation device is disclosed. The system has a rocker arm assembly that includes: a first arm, a second arm with the first and second arms attached at a first end, a hydraulically operated latch assembly that functions to secure the first arm to the second arm when latched. It also includes a source of pressurized fluid connected to a hydraulic valve that provided fluid high or low pressure fluid to the hydraulically-operated latch. The latch may be operated by a remote device. A control gallery connects the hydraulic valve to the latch. A pressure transducer is positioned within the gallery and is adapted to create a signal indicating the pressure in the gallery. A control unit is coupled to the hydraulic valve and the pressure transducer, and is adapted to sense engine operation parameters, actuate the hydraulic valve, read the signal from the pressure transducer; and identify malfunctions of the rocker arm assembly based upon the signal from the transducer.

The displacing device includes a pressing device that presses the switching pin from any one of the coupling position and the non-coupling position to the other one of them, a return spring, and a stopper mechanism. The return spring is provided outside of the input arm and the output arm so as to act on one end of the switching pin, which is exposed from the input arm and the output arm. The stopper mechanism includes a displacement restricting groove that is provided on an outer periphery of the switching pin, and a lock member that is engaged with the displacement restricting groove and contacts one end of the displacement restricting groove when the switching pin is stopped at the non-coupling position.

A linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) for monitoring engine valve position is disclosed. The system includes a valve guide having an elongated recess through it. The engine valve has a valve head and a valve stem with two adjacent materials having different magnetic properties meeting at an interface. The valve stem fits and moves linearly within the valve guide, and the valve head closes an engine combustion chamber. It also includes monitoring coils within the valve guide that create a signal related to the position of the interface within the valve guide. An engine control unit (ECU) is coupled to the monitoring coils and receives and analyzes the signal from the monitoring coils to determine operation of the valve.

The present invention comprises apparatus and methods for releasing internal combustion engine compression during cranking to reduce cranking effort and the size and weight of the starter motor and battery. The method provides a sequence of steps executed by the engine electronic control module to control the compression release apparatus to carry out the engine starting process safely and reliably. 1. The method uses a rocker arm assembly with a hydraulically operated latch for latching together first and second arms of the rocker arm assembly when latched. A novel latch seat for a switching rocker arm assembly used in variable valve actuation (VVA) systems for internal combustion engines. The seat is formed interactively in the assembled switching rocker arm using a novel fixture and press. The press interactively creates a curved dimple of the correct curvature, position and depth while measuring several lash dimensions. Since the latch seat is formed on the assembled rocker arm assembly, the latch seat depth is designed to account for the inaccuracies in the rocker arm assembly parts which create lash. The invention relates to a variable valve drive of an internal combustion engine, comprising at least one functionally identical gas exchange valve per cylinder, the valve stroke of which is specified by at least one primary cam and at least one secondary cam of a camshaft. The valve stroke can be selectively transmitted to the at least one gas exchange valve by a switchable cam follower which has a primary lever and a secondary lever. A coupling element of the switchable cam follower is designed as a coupling pin which is guided in a transverse bore of the primary follower, which can be moved into an opposite coupling bore of the secondary lever by a switching pin.
