Das Steuersignal ändert eine Auslassventilposition des variablen Auslassventils. Die Position des Auslassventils ist so konfiguriert, dass ein Geräuschverhalten des Auslassventils erzeugt wird, das der Betriebsabsicht zugeordnet ist.

A down-pipe 1 receives exhaust gases from the engine and delivers them via an inlet port 2 to an exhaust pipe 3 having an outlet port 4. A valve member 11 protrudes into and through the inlet port 2 and is biassed by a spring 10 towards the down-pipe 1 so that the area of the inlet port is reduced at lower engine speeds, fig. 1, and increased at higher engine speeds, fig.2, to maintain a required back-pressure at the inlet port 2. A series of abutting or neighbouring baffle pods 5, each comprising a shell 7 with a plurality of slots 8, may be placed inside the exhaust pipe 3 so as to define an annular passageway 6 for the flow of exhaust gases. The pods 5 may be located downstream of the spring, fig. 1, or between the valve member 11 and the spring 10, fig.2. Each pod 5 may comprise sound-deadening wadding placed between a slotted inner drum (16, fig.4) and an outer drum (17).

The exhaust pipe comprises, downstream from the expansion chamber 4, an additional pressure reducing chamber 5 separated from the main chamber by a non-return valve 7. At low speed, the additional chamber has the time to empty between two explosions and the assembly behaves as a single large-volume chamber. At high speed, following an explosion, the additional chamber retains a certain pressure at the moment of the following explosion and practically only the main chamber is used, which reduces the dimension of the pressure-reducing pipe.

At least one movable flap is located in the space and is resiliently biased to a closed position and movable by exhaust gas pressure from said closed position to an opened position. The at least one flap provides less restriction to exhaust gas flow through the space in the opened position as compared to the closed position. The one or more flaps are pivotably supported on a spring-biased hinge assembly or are provided as part of a resiliently deformable baffle plate that uncovers flow apertures under force of exhaust pressure. The baffle plate is selectively removable by an end-user to allow for maximum exhaust flow when desired. The flow pipe can be omitted in a base plate only version.

A structure for utilizing exhaust heat of a vehicle is provided. The structure includes a first part that has an exhaust pipe in which exhaust gas having a predetermined temperature passes through and which is heated by exchanging heat with the exhaust gas. A bypass passageway is installed within the exhaust pipe and the exhaust gas is bypassed through the bypass passageway. A thermoelectric element is attached to an exterior of the exhaust pipe, formed by bonding a P-type semiconductor and an N-type semiconductor, and produces electricity using a thermoelectric effect. A second part is attached to the exterior of the thermoelectric element and coolant flows therein. A first exhaust gas passageway is installed in the second part in a longitudinal direction and the exhaust gas passes through the first exhaust gas passageway to heat the coolant.

A triple-baffled muffler enables an engine sound that changes from very quiet when idling to louder as the throttle is pressed. An engine exhaust accessory unit comprises a tubular housing adapted to be fitted over the end of an exhaust header. The outer end of the tubular housing is partially obstructed by a pivotable rigid perforated plate. The plate is pivotally mounted about a transverse axis offset below the central longitudinal axis of the housing. The larger upper section of the plate causes it to swing outward in response to passage of exhaust gases through the housing. The perforated plate automatically modifies engine noises and varies exhaust back pressure as a function of its angular position about the transverse axis. A yieldable spring biases the plate to a perpendicular position across the housing, and resists pivotal movement of the butterfly plate in response to passage of exhaust gases. Stops in the path of movement of the plate limit its movement between a perpendicular position across the housing and a position parallel to the longitudinal central housing axis.
