The radiator cap of an I.C. engine has a main spring-loaded relief valve comprising a rubber-sealing ring 19 held between a member 14 mounted on a stud 8 and a member 17 pressed into the member 14, and a secondary valve consisting of a rubber disc 21 adapted to move freely in the space between the members. When the cooling liquid vaporizes the disc is lifted and allows the vapour to escape through the apertures 23, 24 of the member 17 and the holes 15 in the member 14 until the disc closes on the shoulder 13 of the member 14. The pressure in the radiator then builds up until it lifts the sealing ring 19 from its seating. When the radiator cools, the disc returns to its original position and air passes through the holes 15 and the apertures 24 into the radiator, thus preventing the formation of a vacuum therein. A closure apparatus adapted to mount on a cooling system is formed to include a flow passage arranged to receive fluid discharged from the cooling system. A relief valve is positioned to move between an opened position permitting fluid to flow through the flow passage and a closed position blocking the flow of fluid through the flow passage. The relief valve includes a temperature-activated element moving to a first position when heated to a first predetermined temperature to urge the relief valve to the closed position, and to a second position when cooled below a second predetermined temperature to permit the relief valve to move to the opened position. A pressure-relief valve is positioned in an outer shell to move between an opened position permitting fluid to flow from the cooling system and a closed position sealing the cooling system to block the flow of fluid from the cooling system.

The cooling system consists of a heat exchanger (2) and a three-way thermostatic valve (3) which controls the flow of the cooling fluid as it leaves the engine, as a function of its temperature. It also controls any required flow through the heat exchanger before the fluid is returned to the engine. The three main chambers of the valve, primary (4), secondary, (5) and third (6) are connected by three branches of the cooling circuit to a common point (P). The engine is mounted in the primary branch and the heat exchanger in the secondary. The thermostatic valve has an opening (50) with a removable cap (61) to allow the cooling system to be filled. The filling opening allows fluid to pass directly into either the primary or third chamber. The primary chamber also communicates with the second chamber via a passage (83), which is closed off by the removable cap when it closes the filling opening.

An overflow conduit communicates between a high point in the system and the accumulator. A make-up conduit communicates between the accumulator and a low point in the system. A normally closed pressure valve, opening in response to system pressure exceeding a predetermined value, is in series with the overflow conduit. In series with the make-up conduit, is a normally closed one-way check valve. Minimum and maximum pressures within the accumulator are regulated respective relief valves. Optionally, a vent valve is installed at a high point for escape of air as coolant is introduced into the system.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cap for a radiator filler neck of the type having a peripherally extending upper lip and, downwardly from the lip, a radially inwardly and peripherally extend-ing, upwardly facing pressure valve seat concentric with the axes defined by the neck and the cap. The cap comprises an outer shell for engaging and closing the filler neck, a molded plastic retainer connected to the outer shell, and a molded plastic pressure valve member for engaging the valve seat. The retainer has a peripherally and radially outwardly extending flange and a downwardly extending shank, a sealing ring is carried by the flange for engaging and sealing against the upper lip, and the valve member is provided with an upwardly extending shank. The shanks have interlocking portions for connecting the valve member to the retainer and a spring is disposed about the shanks for yieldably urging the valve member against the valve seat as well as to maintain the interlocking portions in engage-ment. The interlocking shank portions form a bayonet-type connecting arrangement in which one of the two shanks is moved axially into the other shank and then rotated and then moved axially in the opposite direction to complete the interlocking engagement. The retainer is provided with a plurality of peripherally spaced apart, downwardly and radially outwardly extending fingers which deflect resiliently inwardly to permit the retainer to be inserted into the shell and which then move radially outwardly to secure the retainer within the shell.

An over-pessure and under-pressure valve closure cap for a radiator comprises a plastics cover 1 having a peripheral flange 1a from which locking fingers 10, 11 extend inwardly, the lower face of the cover having a surface resting on the upper rim of a radiator filling tube 2 and an annular resilient lip 34 engaging the interior of the tube, a boss 20 supporting a double valve 23 forced against a button 21 by a spring 27. Diametrically opposed finger tabs 4, 5 are formed integrally with the cover 1 which is preferably a moulded superpolyamide. Notches 13, and stops are located on the edge 12 of the filling tube 2 for engagement with the locking fingers 10, 11 so that the cover 1 may be secured in position. The valve 23 has a radially extending slot which enables the valve to be assembled over the button 21. An edge 30a of a synthetic rubber lining 30 fits into-an annular groove 29 in the valve 23 which may also be made of superpolyamide. An over-pressure in the radiator causes the lining 30 to be lifted from its seat 2a on the filling tube 2 and the pressure is vented through an overflow pipe 36. A rounded portion 34a of the lip 34 remains in contact with the wall of the filling tube 2 when the cover 1 is removed until the lining 30 has been withrawn from the seat 2a, thereby ensuring that any fluid under pressure in the radiator is vented through the overflow pipe 36 and not up the filling tube towards the faces of the operator.

ABSTRACT A radiator cap for a filler neck of an automotive radiator tank. The radiator cap has an inner cap rotatably connected with an outer cap, a pressure valve functionally connected with the inner cap in such a manner that the pressure valve can move vertically so that the pressure valve opens the filler neck when the pressure within the radiator tank increases up to a predetermined pressure. The radiator cap further includes a coil spring provided between the inner cap and the pressure valve for biasing the pressure valve toward the filler neck. Since the connecting point between the coil spring and the pressure valve is lower than the connecting point between a sealing portion of the pressure valve and the filler neck, a rotating moment is generated which returns the pressure valve to a horizontal position whenever the pressure valve becomes inclined, and prevents any tendency to return to an inclined position. The pressure valve disclosed can maintain its position horizontally and can open the filler neck always at the predetermined pressure.
