A piston ring for sealing a cylinder wall to a piston body is provided. The piston ring includes a ring body that extends about an axis and has inner and outer faces. The inner face presents a pair of ridges that extend in a radially inward direction, and the outer face presents a groove. A spring of an elastomeric material substantially circumferentially surrounds the ring body and is seated in the groove on the inner face. The spring biases the ring body in the radially inward direction to seal the ridges against the piston body. The ring body also has at least one oil drainage port which extends at an angle relative to the radially inward direction from the inner face to a location on the outer face on one axial side of the spring for conveying oil out of a space between the ridges.

The device includes a cylinder having an inner sleeve for receiving a piston, a carbon scraping ring positioned on the cylinder sleeve, the carbon scraping ring including an inner surface, and an abradable coating applied to the inner surface of the carbon scraping ring providing a wearable surface between the piston and the cylinder sleeve. The abradable coating has a wearable surface, which conforms to the shape created by the movement of the piston and the cylinder sleeve and carbon scraping ring, creating a substantially zero clearance fit between the piston and the carbon scraping ring. The clearance may reduce oil consumption and improve sealing of the cylinder and piston, thereby reducing blow-by. 1. A method of treating the surface of an aluminum-based engine block cylinder bore that has been mechanically roughened. In one form, this method includes using vibratory stress relief, elevated temperature stress relief or cryogenic stress relief so that residual stresses imparted to the surface by the roughening process are reduced. In this way, a protective coating that is also applied to the bore surface will exhibit better adhesion and lower incidence of stress-induced or fatigue-induced cracking. 1. A method of treating a cylinder bore that is formed in an aluminum-based engine block , said method comprising:activating an exposed surface of said bore with mechanical roughening; andreducing residual stress present in said activated surface through at least one of vibration stress relief, elevated temperature stress relief and cryogenic stress relief.2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming at least one protective coating on said treated bore.3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said at least one protective coating is selected from the group consisting of a thermal barrier coating claim 2 , a wear resistant coating claim 2 , an anti-corrosion coating claim 2 , a bond-promotion coating and combinations thereof.4. The method of claim 2 , wherein said at least one protective coating is applied by thermal spraying.5. The method of claim 2 , wherein no cylinder liner is placed between said cylinder bore and said at least one protective coating.6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said vibration stress relief comprises:operating a vibrating device that is in vibration cooperation with said block in order to ascertain at least one resonant frequency response condition associated with said block;imparting vibration to said block from said vibrating device under an operational condition that substantially coincides with said at least one resonant frequency response condition; andmonitoring said imparted vibration until said residual stress is reduced to a ...

A device and method for preventing and removing piston deposit build-up on a piston cylinder assembly of an engine, including a diesel engine, is disclosed. A cylinder having an inner sleeve for receiving a piston, has a piston scraping ring positioned on the cylinder sleeve. The piston scraping ring includes an inner surface, and has a curved or hook shaped feature on its inner surface. The curved or hook shaped feature, named the ‘power groove’ for the purposes of this application, allows for reduced wear between the piston rings and the cylinder sleeve by reducing the pressure on the piston rings by expanding and reversing the flow of combustion gases. Additionally, this reversal of the combustion gases results in a decrease in blow-by gases passing between the piston rings and cylinder sleeve thereby improving sealing between the piston and the cylinder.

The exhaust passage(16) from each valve runs parallel to the valve stems and then bends at an angle to join a common exhaust passage(8). The inlet section of the common passage contains a dividing wall(54), which keeps the two streams from the two valves separate for the first part of their flow after their change of direction. The second valve stem passes through a slot in the dividing wall. The arrangement allows large gas flows with low hydraulic losses improving enine efficiency.

L'entre-sièges est protégé des hautes températures et il ne s'y forme plus de fissures, tandis que la chaleur est bien évacuée par les parties larges de la plaque. The cylinder head has two channels: intake 2 and exhaust 3, terminated by seats 4, 5. The between-seats 7 is subjected to strong thermal stresses. To protect this area and properly evacuate the heat, a heat-conducting plate 9 is provided, which has a hollow space 10 on the between-seats and enlarged areas 11, 12 well applied to the well-cooled areas of the cylinder head. . The between-seats is protected from high temperatures and no more cracks form there, while the heat is well evacuated by the wide parts of the plate.

Improvements in combustion engines

Improvements to the construction and operation of reciprocating internal combustion engines are described. The invention may have particular application to compression ignition engines. The constructional modifications relate to components designed to be inserted between a cylinder head and piston bore where those components effect a reduction in the combustion volume thereby reducing the geometrical compression ratio of the engine. These components may be integrated with the cylinder head and include a cylindrical sleeve or a spacer plate. These components can further incorporate a heating/cooling system to regulate the combustion chamber temperature during various phases of the engine's operation. A method is described which may be used in conjunction with the modified engine whereby turbulence from a turbo charging unit is preserved in the intake air thus enhancing air/fuel mixing. Further variations are made to the timing regime of the engine including delaying closure of the inlet valves and early opening of the exhaust valves. Further operating modifications include varying the shape of the air/fuel mixture cloud which is injected into the combustion volume so that the mixture is forced symmetrically radially outward from the point of injection and combining this step with turbo charging the intake air in such a manner so as to produce turbulence in the air fuel mixture within the combustion volume. This latter operating regime includes early opening of the exhaust valve and late closure of the inlet valve. Modified piston shapes are described as are modifications to the combustion chamber shape resulting from the use of the spacer place or ring components designed to reduce the geometrical compression ratio of the regime.
