Head gasket for a ships motor which is cooled by the motor in which the strip moves consists of a metal core (52) with upper and low (58,60) coatings. The electrode potential of the core is approx. equal to that of the non-ferrous metal surfaces of the motor block (14) and cylinder head (12). The surface of the motor block and cylinder head are made of Al as is the core of the head gasket. The coating layers may be fixed to the core by using an adhesive (64) which is solvent based and water resistant or by mechanical means. The core is perforated to correspond to the openings in the head and block sections. The main openings (66) are provided with ring shaped metallic fire seals (74) which overlays the core on both the upper and lower surfaces (76,78). The fire seal is pref. made from stainless steel. ADVANTAGE - Galvanic corrosion between the gasket and motor surfaces is minimised.

The sleeve is cast-in as it is at an ambient temperature or in a heated state. A cylinder block blank resulting from the casting-in of sleeves at an ambient temperature is subjected to a thermal tratment for reducing the casting strain in each cylinder barrel.
