A solar energy concentrator uses microwaves to heat concentric cones of air within the atmosphere. The cones are directed to the sun and internally receive the incoming solar radiation 21. This causes the incoming solar rays 21 to undergo total internal reflection within the cones which act as waveguides, and focus the radiation at receiver 1 which is located at the apex of the cones. The conical shape is achieved by directing a microwave beam through an axicon 17, to produce a non- diffracting Bessel beam to heat up the air layers in the atmosphere to generate a temperature and hence a refractive index gradient therein. The energy from the receiver is utilized to heat air in a microturbine 3, 5. As the concentric cones are nonsolid, equipment costs and total generation costs are reduced. The system may also be used to capture infrared radiation from the earth surface at night.

The stators 5, 6, 7 of the turbine are cooled by separate water streams 8, 9, 10, to at least partially condense the vapour passing through the turbine. The cooling water 14, 15, 16 is passed to a chamber 4 (figure 5) underneath the trough, to return some of the heat to the water being heated. A temperature gradient exists in the trough, from a cold to a hot end, so cooling water at different temperatures can be used to heat the water at different stages in the trough. A compressor 17 arranged downstream of the turbine compresses the exhaust back to atmospheric pressure. The condensed vapour may be used as a source of purified water.

A flywheel connected operatively to engine and cooler expansion space pistons and a crankshaft connected operatively to engine and cooler compression space pistons actuate the pistons to move a working fluid between the expansion and compression spaces.

The cylinder heads of the engine contain transparent windows through which a concentrated beam of solar radiation is directed into the compression volume of the cylinders during a portion of each cylinder's thermodynamic cycle. A device redirects the concentrated solar beam from cylinder to cylinder during operation of the engine. The concentrated radiation is absorbed within the compression volume of the cylinders of the engine by means of a volumetric absorber characterized by a small total heat capacity compared to the heat capacity of the working gas contained in the cylinder.

Claimed is a three-stage process to generate electrical using energy abstracted from ambient energy using prior art methods. In the first stage heat energy (e.g. geothermal energy) is collected, with parallel collection of electrical energy (e.g. wind turbine) and stored. PURPOSE: A solar energy-driven stirling engine having a start unit is provided to quickly start the engine even if it is repetitively stopped by weather conditions, thereby improving efficiency in generating power. CONSTITUTION: A solar energy-driven stirling engine (1) having a start unit (12) includes a temperature sensor (10), an actuation detecting sensor (11), the start unit, and a control part (13). The temperature sensor at the edge of a solar collecting panel (9) measures the temperature of the solar collecting panel at the heating cylinder of the stirling engine. The actuation detecting sensor comprises an inductive body (11a) and an inductive sensor (11b). The inductive body is fixed to a driving wheel, and the inductive sensor is fixed to a frame. The start unit includes a driven gear (12b), a driving gear (12c), and an idle gear (12e). The driven gear is fixed to the driving wheel. The driving gear is coupled to the driving shaft of a start motor (12a) fixed to a base panel (16) on which the stirling engine is installed. The idle gear is actuated by a solenoid (12d) on the base panel, and switches power for the driven gear and the driving gear. The control part firstly detects the operational condition of the actuation detecting sensor when the temperature of the temperature sensor rises, and feeds power to the start unit when the actuation of the actuation detecting sensor does not exist in order to rotate the driving wheel with the driving force of the start motor.
