The pump has a shaft with an eccentric on it. A piston shoe (11) is spring loaded (47) onto the eccentric and causes a piston to reciprocate in a radial cylinder (16) as the shaft revolves. A discharge valve body (17) is inserted into the pump casing. It has a stepped bore through it the step of which provides the seat for a lightly spring loaded valve disc. The valve body is extended radially inwards (16) towards the shaft. This extension forms the cylinder in which the piston reciprocates. The cylinder extension and piston are shaped to provide a spherical mating surface.

In a plunger pump a communication passage (72) is arranged in a plug (64) for closing a cylinder storing hole (16). The plug (64) is movable relative to the cylinder assembly (24) by a spring. An O-ring (74) for preventing the leakage of a fuel from faces opposed to the cylinder assembly (24) and the plug (64) is attached to the plug (64). When the fuel pressure within a fuel passage (32) is equal to or lower than a predetermined pressure, the O-ring (74) comes in contact with the cylinder assembly (24) by the spring (80), and the fuel leakage from the above opposed faces is prevented by the O-ring (74). If the fuel pressure within the fuel passage (32) is equal to or higher than the predetermined pressure, part of the fuel is vented to the exterior to reduce fuel pressure.

In a modification, the valve 15 is fitted on a spring-loaded seat and the piston 18 delivers to a second co-axial piston of smaller dimensions also fitted with a valve. A pump has a piston which is reciprocatingly moved vertically inside a tubular casing to extract fluid, say, from the bottom of a well. The piston, attached to a motor for driving it, has a horizontally extending base plate with a central opening provided with a plug functioning as a check valve. When a fluid is taken in by the pump, the plug is lifted and the fluid is guided into a reservoir above the base plate. When the pressure inside the reservoir exceeds a specified level, the base plate is compressed downward against an upward biasing force thereon. This opens bleed ducts and allows some of the fluid in the reservoir to flow back down to a chamber below the base plate. Pilot holes are also provided to the piston for allowing small amounts of fluid to escape from the reservoir. This allows the pump to idle at the start-up and hence to start the pump smoothly, as well as to prevent any overpressure conditions.

The present invention relates to a valve assembly (10) which is mounted on a part (piston unit 40) of an air motor (10) arranged for reciprocating movement in a housing (cylinder 12). The valve assembly includes a first valve unit (50), which is mounted on one side of the part (40), and a second valve unit (70), which is mounted on the other side of the part (40). The second valve unit is connected to the first valve unit (50) by means of the part (40) for common movement with the first valve unit relative to the part (40) when the valve assembly is switched as the part (40) reaches one of its two end turning-positions. In order to enable the valve assembly to be switched instantaneously and to eliminate the risk that switching the assembly will not take place, particularly when the motor is operated at a low speed, it is proposed in accordance with the invention, among other things, that each of the valve units (50 and 70 respectively) is produced from an elastomeric material and is provided with integrally formed spring elements (52 and 72 respectively) which will strike against solid abutments (18, 22) in the housing (12) upon mechanical switching of the valve assembly.
