A scroll compressor is provided. The scroll compressor may include a communication hole formed in a fixed scroll for communicating a discharge space and a thrust bearing surface with each other. This may reduce frictional loss between the fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll. Further, if a high vacuum state is about to occur during operation of the compressor, refrigerant in the discharge space may be introduced into the compression chambers through the communication hole. This may prevent the occurrence of a high vacuum state to thereby prevent damage to the compressor. Additionally, when the compressor is stopped, a pressure equilibrium operation may be performed through the communication hole.

This disclosure is directed to compressors with hardened bearing surfaces, particularly laser-hardened bearing surfaces. Laser hardening can be used to precisely harden selected areas of the bearing surfaces of the compressor components. By hardening those selected areas, wear resistance can be improved and sliding wear can be reduced. This can result in thrust plates having different material structures configured to contact one another, such as one having a primarily pearlitic microstructure with the opposing thrust plate having a primarily martensitic microstructure. This can reduce adhesive wear by providing dissimilarity on the wearing surfaces.

A method of operating a scroll compressor , the method comprising:initiating operation of the scroll compressor;applying a first pressure differential in a first direction for an initial period of time across a first seal member sealingly interposed between a fixed scroll body and a floating seal, the first pressure differential biasing the first seal member in a first biased direction;opposing motion of the first seal member in the first biased direction; andapplying a second pressure differential across the first seal member in a second direction opposite the first direction, subsequent to applying the first pressure differential.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of opposing motion of the first seal member includes axially trapping the first seal member relative to the fixed scroll body between a portion of the fixed scroll body and an abutment structure.3. In order to solve the problem, the present invention provides a scroll-type fluid machine provided with: a body unit having a fixed scroll and a turning scroll, each having a lap formed on an end plate thereof; and a motor unit having a drive shaft for driving the body unit, rotors, and a stator. Cooling fins are formed on the opposite surfaces of the fixed scroll and the turning scroll from the surfaces of the respective end plates where the laps are formed. The scroll-type fluid machine is constructed so as to satisfy .alpha./16+lc/4≤ls.alpha./4+lc where .alpha. denotes a radial dimension of the end plate of the fixed scroll, lc denotes a distance in the axial direction from the tip of the cooling fins of the fixed scroll to the tip of the cooling fins of the turning scroll, and is denotes an axial dimension of the stator.
