A sidewall common to both the fermentation chamber and distillation vessel allows for heat transfer of heat generated from fermentation to the distillation vessel to heat the product to be distilled. A method of fermenting and distilling a product is also provided. The method involves receiving in a fermentation chamber a mixed stream to be fermented; transferring heat energy generated by fermentation to a distillation vessel surrounding the fermentation chamber; allowing pressurized fermented product to flow from the fermentation chamber into the distillation vessel via a turbine and rotating a rotor of the turbine by a force of flow of the fermented product to the distiller to generate electricity.

A single-fluid two-phase turbine expander is employed in a compression-expansion refrigeration system. The turbine expander has its rotor mechanically coupled to the drive train of the associated refrigeration compressor, which can be a high-speed centrifugal compressor or a geared screw compressor. The turbine is a straight-forward design, with a rotor disk having peripheral vanes, and a nozzle block that houses the disk and contains a group of nozzles that are directed at the vanes. The nozzles each have an inlet orifice plate and a converging/diverging internal geometry that permits supersonic discharge. The vanes are shaped for impulse reaction and have a sharp exit bend to prevent further flashing of the two-phase mixture in the rotor.

A pumped hydro energy storage system and method are disclosed. The system employs a high-density fluid, such as a slurry, to improve power output. In some cases, the fluid is a binary fluid system, with a high-density fluid and a lower-density fluid, such as water. The lower-density fluid flows through the turbine unit of the system, avoiding the need to modify the system to handle the high-density fluid, while achieving improved power output. The system can be configured with one atmospheric reservoir for a higher-density fluid and another one for a lighter-density fluid. Each of them is connected to a pressurized cavity which is filled with the higher-density or lighter-density fluid. The atmospheric tanks may be at the same elevation, or the tank with high density fluid might be higher for increased energy output. For example, the system may be placed on a topographical elevation.

The gas separator has a cylindrical sidewall with a bore. A shaft driven by a motor of the pump extends through the bore. An inducer is located in the bore for applying pressure to the fluid. In one type, a spinning guide vane imparts swirling motion for the well fluid to separate as it flows through a straight-through bore section. In another type, a tubular barrel locates in the sidewall, defining an intake chamber. The intake port in the sidewall is located above the intake port in the barrel, causing a reverse direction flow to separate gas from the liquid.

A centrifugal pump for separating an entrained gas from a working fluid in which the pump housing (1) has a hollow chamber therein, an axially extending inlet (3) into the chamber, an outlet leading out of the chamber, and a gas vent (15) for the chamber; a rotatable shaft (8) mounted in the housing in axial alignment with the inlet; an impeller (9) is disposed in the chamber and mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith, the impeller includes a plate (11) for dividing the chamber into a first chamber portion communicating with the inlet and outlet and a second chamber portion (16) communicating with the vent. The plate has an aperture (13) extending therethrough for allowing the passing of working fluid and gas therethrough; and is further provided with at least one pumping vane (10) disposed in the chamber portion for pumping the working fluid into the first chamber portion through the inlet and out of the first chamber portion through the outlet. The second chamber portion (16) is partitioned into a plurality of spaces (28) by a plurality of back vanes (14) secured to the plate and a liquid rotatable within the second chamber portion upon the impeller rotating whereby to create pressure differences in the spaces for removing gas in the second chamber portion through the vent.
