Utter Apparatus for unloading a scroll compressor to modulate its capacity by separately controlling fluid flow into first and second inlets. The first and second inlets are disposed diametrically opposite each other in a fixed scroll plate, and are enclosed by a perimeter wrap which extends from the radially outer end of the fixed spiral shaped wrap element. A compliant sealing member is provided between the inner surface of the perimeter wrap and the outer flank surface of the orbiting scroll wrap to interrupt fluid flow between the two inlets through this area. Valves connected to the first and second inlets selectively control the flow of suction fluid into fluid pockets being formed between the radially outer ends of the orbiting and fixed wrap elements to unload the compressor over an extended range of its rated output capacity.

A positive fluid displacement apparatus employing scroll members having interfitting spiroidal wraps angularly and radially offset such that as the spiral centers experience an orbiting motion, they define one or more moving fluid pockets of variable volume. An air moving device has a housing with a primary flow path and a secondary flow path that extends from a secondary inlet of the housing and empties into an inner outlet adjacent the primary flow path. An impeller assembly rotates a blade to cause air to enter the housing and flow along the primary flow path. The flow of air through the primary flow path creates a low pressure region at the inner outlet of the secondary flow path, causing air to flow through the secondary flow path and mix with the air in the primary flow path. The mixture of air flows through a downstream portion of the primary flow path having an expanded width compared to an upstream portion of the primary flow path and exits the housing. Stator vanes may extend longitudinally within the housing to cause columnar air flow. The purpose of the invention is to protect, in a horizontal axis wind turbine with an exhaust aperture for exhausting air from within the nacelle, the exhaust aperture and the internal structures from storm winds through facing the exhaust aperture away from the storm wind, even when storm winds are received from all directions relative to the nacelle. A rotary duct is attached to the nacelle so as to be able to rotate freely in the yaw direction, and is rotated in the yaw direction in accordance with changes in the wind direction. The exhaust aperture is provided at a position that changes direction depending on the rotation of the rotary duct in the yaw direction. By rotating the rotary duct in the yaw direction so that the exhaust aperture will face the downwind side in accordance with changes in the wind direction, the exhaust aperture can be faced away from storm winds, even when storm winds are received from all directions in relation to the nacelle.

Conventional propellers are borne on a hub bearing in their centre. The axial forces acting on the blade tips (3) in particular subject the blades (7) to a large bending moment. Therefore, the blades have to be of very massive construction, which however increases the stresses on the propeller due to centrifugal forces. So the size of such propellers is limited. Furthermore, the cost of the materials for manufacturing conventional propellers is comparatively high. In order to overcome these disadvantages, it is proposed that a propeller (2) equipped with an outer ring (4) be mounted, together with this outer ring (4), in a housing (5), so that a hub bearing can be dispensed with. The axial bending moments acting on the blades (7) of the propeller (2) are reduced, so the blades (7) can be made lighter. The centrifugal forces thus reduced also make larger propeller diameters possible than in the current state of the art. The propeller arrangement (1) can be utilised for ship propulsion and wind generators. <IMAGE>

The proposed funnel-like constructions can collect wind energy from a large area and concentrate it to a smaller area and increase the velocity of the wind before it drives the propeller, the rotor or the turbine. The patent claims are in respect of the use of inflatable or fillable or combined inflatable/fillable funnel-like constructions for concentration of wind power and increasing wind velocity in wind power systems. The wind (1) is concentrated by the funnel-like construction (2) and passes the propeller, the rotor or the turbine (3) at greater velocity. The technical problem of reducing the costs of wind power systems is resolved by the use of air, water, sand etc. as a building material in simple fashion and by the scaling-down of the dimensions of the propeller, the rotor or the turbine as a result of concentrating the wind. The technical problem of eliminating negative environmental effects of wind power systems is resolved by the funnel-like construction encapsulating the propeller, the rotor or the turbine. The principal application of the invention is in wind power systems.

The generator includes a hollow pipe (1) mounted with its axis horizontal, on a shaft (8) held vertical by supports (9). The hollow pipe is able to rotate according to the wind direction, and houses a turbine (3) attached to an alternator (4) providing an electrical output. A sail structure (5) is situated behind the turbine and forms a large cone tapering outwards from the outlet of the turbine. The sail consists of blades supported on elastic arms. The arms of the sail bias the blades outwards, although in strong wind the blades are flexed inwards to form a less widely flared cone. The variation of the angle of the cone adjusts the turbine outlet in order to provide the optimum geometrical design according to the wind speed.

The equipment consists of a vertical chimney (1) opening into a smaller diameter horizontal section. This section houses an air turbine, which is connected to an electrical generator or other mechanical drive (6). The discharge duct (4) opens onto a discharge section (7) of increased diameter which contains a number of extraction fans (5). The fans are electrically driven from the generator (6). The entire system is insulated against radiation losses. The kinetic energy of the mass of air in motion is greater than the power required to drive the fans, resulting in an excess of generated power.

At the outlet the fluid is deflected by a wall (118). The deflecting angle is between 35` and 75`. When designed for operation underwater, buoyancy chambers (124) are sized and positioned to negate gravitational stresses and distortions.
