A clutch assembly for a hoist may comprise a first epicyclic gear train and a first set of friction disks rotationally coupled to the first epicyclic gear train. A second set of friction disks may be in operable communication with the first set of friction disks. Torque may be transferred between the first set of friction disks and the second set of friction disks by means of a friction coupling between the first set of friction disks and the second set of friction disks. A pinion may be rotationally coupled to the second set of friction disks. A splined portion of the pinion may form an output of the clutch assembly. 1. A clutch assembly for a hoist , comprising:a first epicyclic gear train;a first set of friction disks rotationally coupled to the first epicyclic gear train;a second set of friction disks in operable communication with the first set of friction disks, wherein torque is transferred between the first set of friction disks and the second set of friction disks via a friction coupling between the first set of friction disks and the second set of friction disks; anda pinion rotationally coupled to the second set of friction disks, wherein a splined portion of the pinion forms an output of the clutch assembly.2. The clutch assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first epicyclic gear train comprises:a stationary ring gear;a plurality of star gears configured to rotate about an inner circumference of the stationary ring gear; anda carrier coupled to the plurality of star gears.3. The clutch assembly of claim 2 , further comprising a basket configured to transfer toque to the first set of friction disks.4. The clutch assembly of claim 3 , wherein the carrier of the first epicyclic gear train is rotationally coupled to the basket.5. A torque clipping mechanism embodying the concepts of the present invention is adapted to obviate torque spikes from being imparted to the transmission of a vehicle by the crankshaft of an engine during the start-up and shut-down procedures for that engine. The torque clipping mechanism operates in conjunction with a torque transfer device that is operatively connected between the crankshaft, which delivers torque from the engine, and the rotatable input shaft of a vehicular transmission. A spring is employed to effect the application of the torque transfer device, but the spring allows slippage of the torque transfer device upon the application of a predetermined torsional force to the torque transfer device. Hydraulic fluid acting under centrifugal force is employed to preclude slippage when the rotational speed of the power output shaft exceeds a predetermined rate.

Engine output is transferable through the planetary gear set to drive the accessories at a selectable rate, and the motor/generator is controllable to run the accessories while the engine is off and while restarting the engine.

The movement of the piston is limited by a stop 17, and springs 8 are interposed between the piston and friction clutch plates so that the maximum torque transmissible by the coupling is limited. Under such conditions, the torque transmissible by the viscous shear coupling is negligible compared with that of the friction clutch. The coupling may be utilized between axles of a motor vehicle, or in a differential unit. in a further embodiment, Figure 4, the friction clutch may be electro-magnetically disengageable.

[Class 80 (ii)] A clutch which slips upon overload comprises friction plates 8 splined to a drum 6 fixed to a gear wheel 2 and co-acting friction plates 5 splined to a spider 4, the plates 5, 8 being pressed together by annular members 10 under the action of springs 11. A pair of axially movable concentric rings A, B engage one another by inclined teeth 13, 14 and are splined to a hub 3 on a shaft 1 and to the spider 4 respectively by teeth 17 .. 20. In operation, torque is transmitted to the spider 4 from the shaft 1 through the rings A, B which, due to the inclined teeth 13, 14, tend to separate the annular members 10. If the torque exceeds a predetermined amount the members 10 move apart and the clutch plates 5, 8 slip. To prevent overheating of the parts easily fusible material 9 is inserted between some of the plates 5, or the friction surfaces may be of such material. Heating up of the dutch then causes the fusible material to be melted and discharged whereupon the annular members 10 are pressed against the side faces of the spider 4, the clearance between the clutch members being great enough, due to the escape of the fusible material, to prevent further clutch engagement. Instead of an easily fusible material a material which breaks up into small particles upon a rise of temperature may be used. The teeth 13, 14 may be axial and the teeth 17 ... 20 inclined.
