The present invention relates to a shock absorbing apparatus for connection in a drilling string and capable of transmitting the axial drilling work loads and the torsional forces required for rotating a drill bit at the bottom of the drill string. The apparatus includes an elongated housing and a mandrel extending longitudinally within the housing. The housing interior and the mandrel have mutually co-operating formations thereon for transmitting the axial and torsional forces. The mutually co-operating formations have substantial clearance spaces therebetween such that the mandrel has a substantial degree of axial and torsional freedom relative to said housing. A matrix of resiliently deformable material is disposed in the clearance spaces between the mutually cooperating formations so that under the influence of shock loadings on the drill string, the matrix of material deforms and flows to take up and reduce the shocks and vibrations transmitted between the mandrel and the housing.

An adjustable elastomer bias device includes a base member (metal or rigid plastic) having plural receptacles for receiving one end of each of a like plurality of bendable, resilient, elastomer rods. An index member is included in the device; the index member has plural rod guide passages and each elastomer rod passes through one guide passage so that the index member can slide longitudinally along the rods, toward and away from the base member. The index member is anchored at one of several displacement distances from the base member to change the effective stiffness (bias) of the rods. The index member may be rotated for torsional bias or moved laterally for linear bias to effect a further bias adjustment; a retainer holds the additional bias adjustment. The bias force of the device results from bending of the elastomer rods.

Secondary suspension between railway vehicle body and bogie frame has a frusto-conical spring (10) fixed to the chassis and a cylindrical spring (11) fixed to the body. These are super-imposed on the same axis. The spring (10) has an outer housing (12) and an inner one (13) with conical faces. There are intermediate frusto-conical housings (14) which give several layers of rubber (15) in the spring. The angle of the conical faces is about 20-25 deg. and the housings' lengths cross from exterior to interior. When unloaded the upper parts of the housings (14, 13) go above the top of the housing (12). There are also cylindrical springs (11) with a conical seating (17) fitted to the body and matting with the bogie fitted springs.

The shock absorber bushing has an inner ring (5) in the form of diverging coned surface (9, 10) each side of a central bush. This holds the shock absorber shaft. A 'J' section ring (6) is welded to the vehicle body (2), the curved portion facing the inner ring. Rubber (4) is moulded into the annular space between the rings. On curing, stresses are set up, weakening the bond between the rings. The bushing is deformed to induce prestressing and cancel out the stresses. This is done by expanding the inner bush diameter reducin the angle of each coned surface, pressing these mutually inwards.

[Class 108 (iii)] A resilient sup port or mounting for machines or instruments which permits three de grees of movement at or substantially at right angles tc each other against the resistance of resilient material in shear, comprises a body i, j, Fig. 1, of substantially L- section resilient material, a rigid reinforcing member f bonded to both faces of the reentrant angle of the material, a rigid base member a, b, c bonded to the outer face of one limb of the material, a supporting member g, h bonded to the outer face of the other limb, and abutment surfaces which come into contact progressively to increase resistance to further movement of the supporting member towards the base member when the supporting member has so moved a predetermined distance. As shown in Figs. 1, 6, the abutment surfaces are formed by a V-shaped groove l in the material. The members may have different shapes to those shown, e.g. the supporting member g may be of channel-section or a plate united on one face to the material and having lateral portions for securement to the machine. The mounting may also be used in a position inverted to that shown. In a modification, Fig. 2, two inverted L-shaped rubber bodies are each bonded between an angle-iron reinforcing member e and a base-plate m or n and the units secured together in T-formation, a flat or curved machine-supporting plate or plates o being bonded to the upper surface. The abutment surfaces are formed by the rounded corners s of the rubber bodies and the under faces of the plates o. In other constructions, the limbs of angle-iron reinforcing and supporting members are at angles respectively greater and less than a right angle. In a further construction, Fig. 6, the rubber is bonded to the three sides of a channel-section reinforcing member 8 while the supporting member is flanged at 9 for securement to a machine.

When tightening the fixing lugs 4 on the structure S, the mass 8 is thus put under compressive pre-stress, due to the inclination of the walls 3 and 7 relative to the vertical axis.

A shear-compression spring used in a resilient mounting for a body 13 to be isolated from ambient vibrations, e.g. in a vehicle, consists of a resilient gasket 14 with a castellated periphery. The recesses in this periphery are thus bounded by portions of resilient material and each of such portions is required to have two flat perpendicular adjacent surfaces. These two surfaces engage a frame 10 made of T- or L-shaped elements. The complete mounting consists of two such frames, linked by rigid rods 12, and two castellated gaskets which line the space between the frames and the body 13. Each gasket preferably has a continuous recess in its side facing the ends of the body 13 so that the body fits into the gaskets as shown. The material of the gaskets will be stressed in both shear and compression when the assembly is subjected to vibration.

The underside of the chassis is fitted with a central mounting point for the rear axle differential, and this comprises a cone shaped extension (9) over which a rubber pad (18) is slid. The differential housing is attached to a ring shaped support (4) which is slid over the rubber pad while a clamping plate (11) is pressed over the end of the cone and secured by a central bolt (12). The system is simple and self centering and does not require any special mounting brackets, nor any need for vulcanising the rubber pads between the two metal mounting brackets. The pads are separate and are only secured by clamping.

A damping support for suspending a body on a support structure comprises a tubular mounting body 10 for fixing to the support structure, an attaching body 26 for fixing to the body, connected between them an annular elastomeric element 20. The attaching body 26 is provided with a shank 34 which supports a pair of transverse arresting plates 38, 40. The tubular mounting body 10 supports internally an intermediate plate 48. The intermediate plate 48 has a central passage 50 through which the shank 34 is slidable axially with play and a plurality of axially extending holes 52 in each of which a pin 54 is slidably received in a friction fit. If used to mount a vehicle engine, high frequency low amplitude movements of the engine are isolated by the elastomeric spring, but low frequency high amplitude movements from the suspension or the engine starting up are frictionally damped by movement of the pins. <IMAGE>

Elastomeric damping elements and applications for reducing shock and vibration

Shock and vibration eliminating elements are constructed of an elastomeric material, which is formed into shapes that have an elongated, generally trapezoidal cross-sectional area. Upper and lower mounting surfaces extend from the ends of the cross-sectional area. The upper and lower end mounting surfaces of the damping elements have integral, parallel surfaces that are used to mount the element to the two structures. The cross-sectional area of the damping elements locates the mounting surfaces so that a straight line normal to one of parallel mounting surfaces at one end of the cross-sectional area of a block, will not intersect the other mounting surface at the other end of the cross-sectional area. Thus, a force applied in a normal direction to one of the mounting surfaces will be translated into shear forces instead of comprehensive forces. This substantially increases the damping efficiency of the material for shock and vibrations, enabling it to eliminate forces that otherwise would be transmitted through the elastomeric body. A second damping material may be inserted into the interior of the elastomeric body to control the damping characteristics of the damping element.

The invention relates to an elastic fastening element with widely differing stiffnesses in the longitudinal, vertical and transverse directions with an inner part and an outer part, between which elastic buffers are clamped, the opposing support surfaces of the inner part running obliquely to one another. In order to connect the fastening element to a tubular element in a simple manner, the inside of the expandable inner part is lined with an elastic layer, the inner diameter of which is the same as the diameter of the tubular element and which has an opening smaller than 180 °, so that the inner part after a slight expansion can be pushed radially onto the tubular element and is braced in the installation position by the elastic buffer.

Class 108(3) An elastic shock absorber or suspension device comprises two parts 19, 21, relatively movable and connected by means of a deformable block 3 having a cut-away portion 4 of flared or tapered configuration the lips 8; 9, of which, are made to approach one another and come into contact to an extent which increases with the load, and present a curvilinear profile which determines the spring rate of the device. In Fig. 9, the part 19 comprises two portions 19, 20 rigidly connected together and secured to opposite ends of the block 3. The part 21 comprises a stirrup connected to a middle portion 10 of the block 3. The cutaway portion 4 is engaged by two plates 13, 14, having curved end portions 15, 16, adapted to engage a circularly hollowed out portion 5 at the inner end of the cut-away portion 4. A lower screw 18 may be rotated to adjust the degree of pre-tension in the portion 10 of the block 3. An upper screw 18 may be adjusted to vary the abutment characteristics of the surfaces 13, 14 in relation to the lips 8, 9, of the block 4. In a modified construction (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) the lower screw 18 is dispensed with and the plates 13, 14, are articulated adjacent the parts 15, 16. In a further modification the parts 19 and 20 constitute the relatively movable parts, the stirrup 21 being omitted. The block 3 then has a U- shape, and in their relative movement the parts 19, 20, move towards or away from each other to bendthe limbs of the U about its rounded portion.
