A second cavity in the form of a crushable container is deployed within the primary chamber. An elastomeric compound is contained in one cavity and an elastomeric hardener contained in the other cavity. Upon application of an external force to the elastomeric enclosure, the enclosure is elastically deformed from a first shape to a second shape, wherein the second shape positions the elastomeric enclosure into a sealing configuration between adjacent annular surfaces. The external force also crushes the container, to cause mixing of the elastomeric compound and elastomeric hardener. Once the reaction is complete, the hardened compound retains the deformed shape of the elastomeric enclosure to maintain a seal between the annular surfaces.

The method reduces flow of a fluid between the shaft (102) and the housing. The method involves installing the housing in an opening relative to the shaft and locating the seal relative to the housing. The seal includes a gel material that expands when exposed to a fluid. The seal (102a, 102b) reduces flow of the fluid through a gap between the housing and the shaft. Advantages of the system and method include reduced wear to the seal due to friction because the seal does not engage the shaft in the absence of a fluid. The seal engages the shaft in the presence of a fluid. Sealing quality is improved by increasing the pressure differential acting on the gel material. In some embodiment, the seal includes a lip portion (126a, 126b).

An expandable seal features a ring structure with internal and external seal. The seals are mounted in grooves and extend beyond a base outer dimension on the ring on the inside and the outside surfaces. Bumps are positioned in axial alignment with the seals but in opposition to each seal so that the exterior seal has a bump axially aligned but on the inside of the ring and the inner seal has a bump axially aligned and on the outside surface of said ring. Seal rings can be stacked to adjust to dimensional irregularities in the surrounding tubular or the mandrel and to back each other up in the event of seal failure in any one seal ring. 1. An expandable seal assembly , comprising:at least one tubular body having an inside and an outside base surface;at least one seal disposed in a groove in said base surface on an interior and exterior of said tubular body;at least one bump on an opposite side of said tubular body from at least one said seal and in substantial axial alignment therewith.2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein:said bump extends radially beyond an adjacent base surface.3. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein:said bump has a tapered end transition to said adjacent base surface.4. A seal ( 10 ) includes a hot-melt polymer ( 12 ) with a foaming agent, and a heating agent ( 18 ) for providing heat to at least partially melt the hot-melt polymer ( 12 ) and to activate the foaming agent. A heat conductive barrier ( 16 ) is disposed between the hot-melt polymer ( 12 ) and the heating agent ( 18 ) to inhibit mixing of the heating agent ( 18 ) with the hot-melt polymer ( 12 ). This reduces the likelihood that the hot-melt polymer ( 12 ) will burn if the heating agent ( 18 ) produces a large quantity of heat, and also helps to ensure that the hot-melt polymer ( 12 ) will be uncontaminated by the heating agent ( 18 ) and will therefore form an effective seal. When the foaming agent is activated by the heat, it produces gas to expand the partially melted hot-melt polymer ( 12 ) to fill gaps and form an effective seal.

An improved expandable gasket, sealed joint and method of forming a sealed joint which includes a gasket having at least 5% by weight unexpanded or unexfoliated graphite. The graphite material is preferably a mixture of expanded and unexpanded graphite compressed in a sheet or other shape affixed to a metal plate. The preferred composition is 5 to 70% by weight of unexpanded graphite and 30 to 95% expanded graphite, wherein the percentage of unexpanded graphite is controlled to provide the desired gasket expansion. A more preferred composition includes at least 10% by weight unexfoliated graphite or more preferably 15 to 50% by weight. The gasket is placed between the surfaces to be sealed and clamped in place. When the joint is heated, the unexpanded graphite exfoliates, causing the gasket to swell or expand, tightly sealing the joint. The expandable gasket of this invention is particularly suitable for automotive application, including head and exhaust gaskets which are subject to temperatures exceeding about 400° C.

An expandable seal features a ring structure with internal and external seal. The seals are mounted in grooves and extend beyond a base outer dimension on the ring on the inside and the outside surfaces. Bumps are positioned in axial alignment with the seals but in opposition to each seal so that the exterior seal has a bump axially aligned but on the inside of the ring and the inner seal has a bump axially aligned and on the outside surface of said ring. The bumps have end transitions to the base dimension to create a volume for the seal material to travel axially when radially expanded from a mandrel extending within for effective seal containment. Male and female flanges are provided, where one of the flanges has a recess that accommodates a seal ring. The outer peripheries of the two flanges' sealing surfaces are in contact with each so that clamping, bolting and bending stresses are not borne by the seal ring. The seal ring has a cross-section that includes a solid body and two V shaped sealing portions that extend from the body at an angle between 90 and 160 degrees. Each sealing portion has a set of opposing sealing faces with a cavity between them, so that fluid pressure within the cavity urges the sealing faces outward from the first cavity toward the flanges. 1. A device comprising:a bidirectional pressure-energized seal ring having a cross-section which hasa body,a first sealing portion adjacent to the body, including a first set of opposing sealing faces having a first cavity therebetween, wherein fluid pressure within the first cavity urges the first set of sealing faces outward from the first cavity, anda second sealing portion adjacent to the body, including a second set of opposing sealing faces having a second cavity therebetween, wherein fluid pressure within the second cavity urges the second set of sealing faces outward from the second cavity,wherein the first cavity opens away from the body toward a first direction, and the second cavity opens away from the body toward a second direction which forms an angle of between 90 degrees and 160 degrees with the first direction.2. Aspects of the invention use increased concentrations ozone in sealed, confined volumes, such as, for example, carts, lockers, cabinets, etc. to disinfect or sterilize medical articles. A medical article is placed in a confined volume. The confined volume is sealed so that the atmosphere inside the sealed, confined volume is isolated from the external atmosphere. The concentration of ozone in the sealed, confined volume is rapidly increased to a threshold concentration. At the threshold ozone concentration, the medical article can be disinfection or sterilized in a reduce amount of time. When disinfection or sterilization is complete, the concentration of ozone in the sealed, confined volume is rapidly reduced to a safe level. The sealed, confined volume is unsealed. The disinfected or sterilized medical article can be removed from the confined volume.

An improved expandable gasket, sealed joint and method of forming a sealed joint which includes a gasket (20) having at least 5 % by weight expanded or unexfoliated graphite. The graphite material (22) is preferably a mixture of expanded and unexpanded graphite compressed in a sheet or other shape affixed to a metal plate (24). The preferred composition is 5 to 70 % by weight of unexpanded graphite and 30 to 95 % expanded graphite, wherein the percentage of unexpanded graphite is controlled to provide the desired gasket expansion. A more preferred composition includes at least 10 % by weight unexfoliated graphite or more preferably 15 to 50 % by weight. The gasket is placed between the surfaces to be sealed and clamped in place. When the joint is heated, the unexpanded graphite exfoliates, causing the gasket to swell or expand, tightly sealing the joint. The expandable gasket of this invention is particularly suitable for automotive application, including head and exhaust gaskets which are subject to temperatures exceeding about 400 ~C.

An expandable seal features a ring structure with internal and external seal. The seals are mounted in grooves and extend beyond a base outer dimension on the ring on the inside and the outside surfaces. Bumps are positioned in axial alignment with the seals but in opposition to each seal so that the exterior seal has a bump axially aligned but on the inside of the ring and the inner seal has a bump axially aligned and on the outside surface of said ring. The bumps have end transitions to the base dimension to create a volume for the seal material to travel axially when radially expanded from a mandrel extending within for effective seal containment. Seal rings can be stacked to adjust to dimensional irregularities in the surrounding tubular or the mandrel and to back each other up in the event of seal failure in any one seal ring.

The sealing device consists of a ring seal (46) whose surface (62) adjoins the bolt (58). In the ring seal (46) is a circular groove (50) in which an O-ring (56) is held. The O-ring (56) is made of absorbing material, which on contact with water expands outwards in the radial direction. As a result, the ring seal (46) is deformed so that its surface (62) pushes against the bolt (58) and seals it. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in military assemblies, such as mines, where the safety and detonation pins extend outwards from the mine housing and in the course of use are moved inwards and outwards. Systems and methods associated with a fluid-activated shaft seal are provided. The system (100) includes a housing (104) and a seal disposed relative to the housing. The method reduces flow of a fluid between the shaft (102) and the housing. The method involves installing the housing in an opening relative to the shaft and locating the seal relative to the housing. The seal includes a gel material that expands when exposed to a fluid. The seal (102a, 102b) reduces flow of the fluid through a gap between the housing and the shaft. Advantages of the system and method include reduced wear to the seal due to friction because the seal does not engage the shaft in the absence of a fluid. The seal engages the shaft in the presence of a fluid. Sealing quality is improved by increasing the pressure differential acting on the gel material. In some embodiment, the seal includes a lip portion (126a, 126b).
