The present invention relates to a gasket (1) comprising a first discrete component and a second discrete component, wherein the first and second components (20) extend along the length of the gasket (1). The second component (20) is arranged relative to the first component (10) so as to separate the first component (10) at least from one of the two sealing surfaces (2, 4). The first component (10) is relatively hard in at least the thickness direction of the gasket (1) and preferably incompressible and the second component (20) is relatively soft in at least the thickness direction of the gasket (1) and compressible. When the gasket is compressed between two flanges (101, 102), there is a limited region of high compression, because the first component (10) increases the pressure by which the second component (20) is compressed between the surfaces of the flanges. This yields a high leak tightness of the sealing at a relatively low force.

When the gasket is compressed between two flanges (101, 102), there is a limited region of high compression, because the first component (10) increases the pressure by which the second component (20) is compressed between the surfaces of the flanges. This yields a high leak tightness of the sealing at a relatively low force.

A seal is adapted to be received in an annular groove in a first member and is compressed against a groove bottom by a second member that defines a gap between the first and second members. The seal includes a reinforcement member and an elastomer body over-molded on the reinforcement member. The reinforcement member is disposed on an outboard side of the elastomer body and the elastomer body extends both above and below the reinforcement member. The compression of the seal causes the elastomer body to deform such that the reinforcement member provides a reinforcement substantially along the entire gap to prevent the elastomer body of the seal from being extruded through the gap. 1. A seal system comprising:a first member defining a groove in a first surface, said groove having a depth in a direction perpendicular to the first surface and a width in a direction parallel to the first surface;a second member including a second surface opposing the first surface with a joint gap between the first surface and the second surface; anda seal is adapted to be received in the groove in the first member and is compressed against a groove bottom by the second member, the seal includes a reinforcement member and an elastomer body over-molded on the reinforcement member, the reinforcement member is disposed on an outboard side of the elastomer body and the elastomer body extends both above and below the reinforcement member, the compression of the seal between the first and second members causes the elastomer body to deform such that the reinforcement member provides a reinforcement of the elastomer body substantially along the entire gap to prevent the elastomer body of the seal from being extruded through the gap.2. An assembly for use on an aircraft wing having an aircraft skin and a fuel tank, the assembly comprising a metal access door for accessing the fuel tank, a metal retainer ring for engaging the wing and the access door. Fasteners removably couple the access door to the retainer ring. Fireworthy sealants may have a variety of compositions and be made by a variety of techniques. In certain implementations, a fireworthy sealant may include a body comprised of a cured, tacky, soft, deformable non-adhesive gel. An elastomeric seal ( 20 ), such as a shaft seal for automotive vehicle applications, includes an elastomeric compound ( 22 ) chemically coupled to a metal sealing ring ( 24 ) and is formed without an oven post curing step. The elastomeric seal ( 20 ) provides exceptional physical properties, similar to those of elastomeric seals of the prior art formed with an oven post curing step. The elastomeric seal ( 20 ) has an elastic modulus of 6.0 MPa to 13.0 MPa and a tensile strength of 11.1 MPa to 14.8 MPa. The elastomeric compound ( 22 ) includes 52.0 to 68.0 wt. % fluoroelastomer, 20.0 to 35.0 wt. % calcium silicate, and 5.0 to 15.0 wt. % diatomite. The elastomeric compound ( 22 ) is fully cured and chemically coupled to the metal sealing ring ( 24 ) during the compression or injection molding step, and thus an oven post curing step is not required.

A spacer and gasket assembly is shown for receipt between a static structure having a surface and fastener holes therethrough and a removable structure having a surface and fastener holes. The static structure and removable structure are engaged through a multiplicity of fasteners having a shaft diameter.
