A valve actuator with an emergency shutdown feature incorporates shutdown of the valve when a sensed line pressure is outside of high- and low-pressure trip points. The actuator can be manually tripped. The actuator can be tripped in the event of a fire or, incorporating a solenoid, a trip can be accomplished with an appropriate signal. Once tripped, the actuator requires manual reset. The normal open and closed operation of the valve cooperates with a clutching mechanism which is part of the trip system. The preferred embodiment of the clutching system is a torsion spring or springs which normally allow movement in one direction but not in the other unless acted upon by the tripping system.

A fluid regulating device includes a regulator valve, an actuator and a pilot regulator valve assembly. The pilot regulator valve assembly provides a pressure load to a surface of a diaphragm of the actuator in response to changes in downstream pressure being applied to the opposite surface of the diaphragm. When the predetermined pressure is attained the toggle is forced over-centre to remove the additional loading and the valve opens against its main spring 17 only. The toggle which is reset by a lever 44 or a piston device is independent of the main spring and provides for normal valve operation should the additional loading means fail. The main spring may be dispensed with. The valve may be replaced by a burster disc with a reinforcing member actuated by the additional loading means.

A flow blockage suction interrupt of the present invention reduces the dangerous possibility of bodily suction entrapment of a bather in a swimming, wading, or hydrotherapy pool. The safety valve operates to instantaneously introduce atmosphere into a suction piping system of a pool when a dangerous vacuum condition is detected. The incoming atmosphere breaks the vacuum, freeing entrapped bather. The safety valve includes a dynamic plug and dual spring-loaded actuators, one closing and one opening the valve to atmosphere. The closing actuator is dominant until the opening actuator is triggered by the dangerously high vacuum level that accompanies bodily suction entrapment. The preferred embodiment incorporates a spring-loaded telescopic actuator shaft that is spring-loaded to open fully once triggered, and is triggered by a factory-calibrated diaphragm-actuated suction sensor. Once this safety valve has been tripped, it must be manually reset by the pool operator.

A relief valve provides pressure relief when a fluid line exceeds a predetermined pressure. The valve includes a body which defines a cavity between inlet and outlet flowpaths. The valve includes a lever arm, which pivots around a pivot point as the valve changes between open and closed positions. A plunger assembly is disposed in the cavity and seals the cavity from the inlet and outlet flowpaths in the closed position. Fluid pressure from the inlet flow path causes the plunger assembly to contact the lever arm to urge the lever arm to rotate. The lever arm engages a spring at a further distance from the pivot point than the plunger assembly, the spring resisting pivoting of the lever arm and urging the valve to remain in the closed position unless a predetermined pressure is exceeded.

This design has three modes of operation, no-detent, continuous detent and kick-out detent. The no-detent position allows flow to pass through the relief valve, from a first port to a second port and bypass the relief function. The pressure created, disengages the detent mechanism in the spool valve. The spool always returns to neutral position as long as pressure is present. The continuous detent position blocks the flow from a first port to a second port. The kick-out detent position allows flow to pass from the first port to the second port to override (kick-out) the detent mechanism in the spool when the pressure is greater than 2600 psi.

Such communication is, however, established upon the surges exceeding the predetermined pressure value. In the former instance, the valve member part 50 merely moves within seat member 60 to an extent determined by the maximum possible axial movement of the latching mechanism D within the confines of bore 21. Upon the pressure rising above the predetermined value, the displacement of valve member 32, 50 is such that the ball member 40 of the latching mechanism D leave the bore 21 and so leave the recessed portion 33 of the valve member part 32. Accordingly, the valve member 32, 50 is rendered free of the action of spring 26 and so continues to move upwardly until it abuts the valve housing cover R, the passage between the inlet 19 and outlet 30 being thus opened. Subsequent to the release of pressure, the valve member is reset manually by depressing rod 34 until the ball members 40 re-enter the recess 33 and so hold the valve member in a state wherein its terminal part 50 is allowed a certain movement relative to the seat 60 without actual opening of the valve. An intake manifold relief valve comprising a valve body (13) having at least two openings, one opening being an inlet (22) for gas and another opening being an outlet (23) for gas to relieve excess pressure, a piston (8) for opening and closing said gas inlet (22) and containing an orifice hole (21) to maintain a constant pressure on both sides of the piston (8) said valve body (13) also cooperating with said piston (8) to form an enclosed gas chamber the size of which is decreased as said piston (8) moves to open said valve, a piston spring (5) applying a force on said piston (8) in addition to that provided by the gas pressure within said chamber to maintain it in a closed postion under normal conditions, said piston (8) moving to open said gas inlet (22) when excess pressure with the manifold overcomes the force of said piston spring (5), thereby allowing gas to escape through said valve outlet (23); as the pressure is equalized within the valve through said orifice hole (21), said piston spring (5) will force said piston (8) back to closed position; the size of said orifice (21) being selected to determine the pressure at which the piston (8) useats and the valve opens. The spring (5) is used to return the piston (8) to a closed position and close the valve as soon as the pressure transient has passed through the outlet (23) and the oxygen in the atmosphere entering throught the exhaust opening cannot cause a secondary explosion in the valve.
