An exhaust connection coupler and a method for manufacturing a braid cover incorporated therein are provided. The coupler may include an inner flexible bellows member and an outer braid cover surrounding the bellows member. The braid cover may be formed into a predetermined shape prior to assembly with the coupler. The braid member can include a generally cylindrical body section and two end sections each forming necks having diameters that are smaller than the diameter of the body section. The body section of the braid cover is self-supporting and is positioned an appreciable distance from the bellows member in order to avoid any friction and to create a thermally insulating air gap therebetween. The braid cover may be constructed of braided wire filaments that are formed into shape with forming dies. The braid cover may be pressed between two forming dies in order to create its desired shape.

A flexible, metal pipe coupling comprises a pair of unions connected by a length of helically or annularly corrugated metal tubing 1 at the ends of which are annular flanges 3. Around the tubing and between the flanges is a sheath 15 of rubber, silicone rubber or other rubber or like plastic elastic and resilient material, the sheath being moulded over and into at least the end convolutions of the tubing ; also, the ends of the sheath are bonded to the flanges. As shown, the flanges 3 have coaxial tubular bosses 5 and are fitted over the cylindrical ends of the tubing 1, the marginal portions 6 of those ends being outwardly spun. Each end of the tubing is received in an external rebate 9 formed on a tubular spigot 8 and brazing 11 forms a fluidtight joint. Prior to moulding the sheath 15 in which a tube 17 of wire gauze or fire-resistant fabric is embedded, fabric 13 is wrapped around the tubing 1. A braided metal covering 18 is provided around the sheath and the marginal portions 16 of the flanges 3 are spun inwardly and downwardly to approximately frustoconical form to grip and protect the ends of the sheath. Classes 99(1) and 99(2) [Also in Group XXII] Corrugated tubing e.g. of metal, comprises a resilient tubular body made from a single piece of tubing having annularly extending corrugations formed by inner cylindrical wall portions 23, Fig. 7, and outer annular wall portions 42 having a substantially part-circular axial crosssection which normally extends through an arc materially greater than 180 degrees and is free from reverse curvatures. Tubing 10, Fig. 2, having hydroformed corrugations made as disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 1,946,472, is placed in a formed jig 16 composed of separable sections 17 secured together by bolts. An eccentricallymounted mandrel is rotated about its axis so as to flatten the portions 15 against the cylindrical portions 21. In another method an uncorrugated tube is subjected to internal fluid pressure to flatten the portions 23, Fig. 4, against the bores of a series of axially displaceable rings 26. Tubing formed by either method is then clamped at each end in a device 28 to enable the tube to be lengthened by turning the handle 37, which by means of the screw threaded rod 36 and mating bush 39, moves the end plate 30 away from the end plate 39. With the tubing cross-section shaped as shown at 41, hydraulic pressure is introduced into the tube through a conduit 33 to cause the portions 12, 13 and 14 to be ballooned out whilst the tube is shortened by rotation of the handle 37. The pipe comprises a hose with annular corrugations and in one or more layers and of metal, resistant to high internal and external pressure and/or temp. coupling flanges being fixed to its ends. One at least of the layers is of tough material forming a seal for the medium handled, and this is reinforced by one or more layers of narrow tape, wire, fibre etc. of strong material, following its contours. The reinforcing components can be arranged to run in the lengthwise direction of the hose, or at an angle to the latter.

A flexible tube includes a bellows tube, an interlock tube placed inside the bellows tube, and upstream-side and downstream-side joint pipes coupled to opposite ends of the bellows tube. Diameters of fixing end portions located at opposite ends of the interlock tube are made larger than a diameter at a middle portion of the interlock tube, extension portions of the upstream-side and downstream-side joint pipes are fitted and fixed to inner peripheral surfaces of the fixing end portions of the interlock tube, and a depth of each of valley portions of a bellows portion of the bellows tube located over the fixing end portions is smaller than a depth of other valley portions of the bellows portion. Accordingly, it is possible to achieve the downsizing of the flexible tube that is connected to an exhaust system being continuous with an engine to dampen vibrations in the axial direction of the exhaust system.

A flexible connection arrangement for connecting a pipe of an exhaust system to an engine is provided at one of its axial ends with a fastening flange and at its other axial end with a connection piece for the end of the pipe to be received. The connection piece and fastening flange are connected with one another via a helical spring. A metallic bellows and a damping insert which extends coaxially to the bellows, encloses the bellows radially externally and contacts the turns of the bellows are provided between the connection piece and the fastening flange. The helical spring is connected at both of its axial end regions with the connection piece and fastening flange, respectively. The connection at the fastening flange is effected via two fastening locations, one of which lies at that end of the helical spring, while the second fastening location is arranged so as to be offset to the first fastening location by an angle of 45° to 53°. The first fastening location viewed in the winding direction of the helical spring lies at an angle in the range of 10° to 20° in front of a radial tilt axis running vertical to the longitudinal axis of the connection arrangement, the connection arrangement being tilted about this tilt axis when used in the prescribed manner.
