Power tools with conductive couplings used with active injury mitigation technology are disclosed. Conductive couplings are particularly relevant to table saws, hand-held circular saws, track saws, miter saws, and band saws with active injury mitigation technology. The processor is configured to execute the program instructions to detect a man profile within a detection zone associated with the cutting assembly, establish a location of the human profile within the detection zone based upon the detection using the spatial recognition algorithm, determine that an unsafe condition exists based upon the established location, and activate the reaction system. 1. Power tools with conductive couplings used with active injury mitigation technology are disclosed. Conductive couplings are particularly relevant to table saws, hand-held circular saws, track saws, miter saws, and band saws with active injury mitigation technology. Conductive couplings provide a mechanism through which an electrical signal can be coupled or imparted to a blade, and then monitored for changes indicative of human contact with the blade. An exemplary conductive coupling includes a brush that establishes an electrical connection with a moving part of a power tool, and the brush maintains contact with the moving part of the power tool during at least 40 hours of cumulative time when the motor is spinning the arbor and blade without an interruption in the electrical connection sufficient to trigger the reaction system. A conductive coupling may be two-sided compliant. A conductive coupling may connect to a motor shaft to minimize electrical noise. 1. The disclosure relates to a system for the detection of human presence in hazardous situations near moving machinery; appropriately shaped electrodes are placed in an area to be safeguarded and a radio-frequency signal of appropriate frequency and voltage is applied on the electrodes creating an alternating electric field around them. A bridge circuit is used to measure the capacitive impedance created by the electrodes and a dissipation factor is calculated from the real and imaginary parts of the impedance. If a foreign object is introduced into the electric field, the characteristics of the dielectric are modified creating a change of the value of the dissipation factor. The dissipation of energy in the high frequency region is much greater if this foreign object is a biological tissue as compared to other types of materials, such as conductors or insulators. Thus, the system detects human presence by noting the increase of the dissipation factor above a threshold value, and the movement of the appropriate machine part can then be stopped, thereby eliminating the danger of injury to the person.

An " AND " circuit including PNP transistors 65, 70, 74 controls the potential at 76 in response to switches 53, 59, the effect of switch 59 being over-ruled when the switch 53 contacts 53c. Initially, with the guards open, switch 53 contacts 53b and switch 59 is closed. Insertion of a hand with a workpiece into the danger zone causes switch 59 to open, and withdrawal of the hand re-closes the switch. The successive opening and closing of switch 59 acts via a differentiating circuit including a capacitor 86 and a diode 85 to produce a pulse which switches the bi-stable circuit comprising transistors 77, 78 to a state in which transistor 77 is non- conductive and transistor 78 is conductive, to provide an output to an amplifier including transistors 89, 93, 97 causing energization of a solenoid 61. This initiates closure of the guards, which when fully closed initiate press operation. Also when the guards are closed, switch 53 contacts 53c. At the end of the press ram working stroke the switch 49 is momentarily closed to reset the bi-stable circuit to its initial state, de-energizing solenoid 61. At the end of the press-ram return stroke, the guards are released, and open, allowing switch 53 to return to 53b. A capacitor 66 in the " AND " circuit causes a time delay between the return of switch 53 to contact 53b and the change of transistor 65 to its conductive state, which allows switch 59 to become effective to initiate a new cycle.

Consequently, change of the capacitance C 0 comparable to that brought about upon detection of the human body takes place, whereby a substantially similar detection signal as the human body detection signal is made available. On the basis of this detection signal, it is possible to monitor whether or not the sensor apparatus is operating normally.
