A smart street lighting system and method employs a plurality of street lights having a luminaire, a luminaire associate and a support pole. A communications module is contained within the luminaire associates and a power line is contained within the support poles. The power line is coupled to the communications module, the luminaire associate and the luminaire, and a steerable millimeter wave radar operatively coupled to the communications module. The communications module operates in a radio frequency network in a frequency range of 57-64 GHz. The steerable millimeter wave radar provides a signal reflected from a target that may be received by one of the luminaire associates within the system. A powerline communications system interfaces with the radio frequency network to provide communications between the communications modules in the street lights and the PLC system.

The present disclosure relates to lighting fixtures for use in a lighting network where the lighting fixtures and other elements are able to communicate with each other via wired or wireless communication techniques. When the lighting network is being formed or modified, the lighting fixtures may be able to communicate with each other and automatically determine a single lighting fixture to act as a coordinator during a commissioning process. The lighting fixtures can exchange their communication addresses, such as MAC addresses, wherein the lighting fixture with the lowest (or highest) normal communication address becomes the coordinator. The coordinator may also be configured to assign short addresses to use for communications once the lighting network is formed instead of the longer MAC, or like, addresses. The disclosure relates to an apparatus comprising a pole such as a light pole, and one or more removable modules adapted to be removably fitted to the pole. The apparatus further comprises, included in the lighting module or another of the modules, a controller comprising a wireless receiver for wirelessly receiving on-off signals from a remote control system. An inductive coupling between a primary winding in the light pole and a secondary winding in the lighting module is used to transfer power from a power supply of the pole to at least one of the removable modules, in order to power an element of that module. Further, a magnetic coupling is used to enable the controller to control a switch in the pole in order to connect and disconnect the primary winding to and from the power supply.

An adapter that provides a remote control capability for a light switch is mounted on a support structure (e.g. a wall), and includes a base plate which is also mounted on the support structure to surround the ON/OFF mechanism of the light switch. A connector is mounted on the adapter in the enclosed space to interact mechanically with the ON/OFF mechanism of the light switch. Herein is described an invention that efficiently detects and reports vehicle impact with fixed or temporary roadway safety devices. A multitude of sensors may report road events via a single cellular or fiber optic gateway thereby substantially reducing acquisition and recurring cost. The use of a mesh network to connect these sensors provides low duty cycle monitoring. Extremely low-power circuitry that allows for multi-year battery life of small, light-weight solar photovoltaic panel is achievable through precise node-to-node timing. Radio transmission and reception is limited to a few milliseconds in each second. The novel mesh network architecture does not utilize an external coordinating signal, timing signal, or connection. Synchrony is maintained internal to the mesh network. Duty cycles of less than approximately 0.01% are achievable. 1.
