An illumination device and a method controlling the same are provided. The illumination device produces a pulse width modulation signal to control an illumination light source of the illumination device. The illumination light source is used to illuminate an environment. A driver of the illumination device provides a current to the illumination light source so the illumination light source emits light and a light detecting element of the illumination device detects a first brightness in the environment when the pulse width modulation signal is at high potential. The driver stops providing the current to the illumination light source and the light detecting element detects a second brightness in the environment when the pulse width modulation signal is at low potential. Thus, through a single light detecting element, two different levels of brightness in the illuminated environment are detected.

A lighting element for a solar powered lantern is formed integrally with a bottle closure which can be threaded onto a discarded plastic bottle, such that the light emitting diodes (LEDs) of the lighting element extend into the bottle. The lighting element is powered by a rechargeable battery which is recharged by a photovoltaic panel positioned on the top surface of the bottle closure. 1. A solar powered lantern , comprising:a translucent plastic base having a closed bottom end, a top end, and a threaded opening at the top end;a threaded closure mating with the threaded opening at the top end and having a flat top surface and a photovoltaic panel arranged on the top surface;a rechargeable battery arranged on a side of the closure opposite the photovoltaic panel and connected to the photovoltaic panel; andan elongated lighting element connected to the rechargeable battery arranged on a side of the closure opposite the photovoltaic panel and comprising an array of light emitting diodes (LEDs) extending away from the top surface of the closure into the base.2. The solar powered lantern according to claim 1 , wherein the base is a discarded standard plastic beverage container.3. The solar powered lantern according to claim 1 , wherein the base is a discarded polyethylene terephthalate bottle.4. A transmissive display apparatus allows see-through observation in which video light and outside light are superimposed on each other for visual recognition of the superimposed light and further allows a light control shade to control the outside light by changing the outside light transmittance of the light control shade in accordance with a change in quantity of the outside light. In this case, in particular, when a decrease in the outside light quantity is detected with an outside light sensor, which is the outside light detection section, a light quantity control section of a primary control section performs quick response control in which the transmittance of the light control shade is quickly adjusted (outside light quantity is controlled). 1.
