In a safety cut-off valve for gas burners in which a spring-closed valve member 7 is opened and held open by a bi-metal strip 14 acting through a push-rod 15 the possibility of the valve failing to close due to dirt &c. where the push - rod passes through a close-fitting bore in the housing is avoided by the provision of a bush 16 which is a close fit on the push-rod to prevent leakage and is urged by a spring 18 into engagement with the end of a fixed bush 19 which has substantial clearance around the push-rod. The spring 18 is weaker than the spring 9 so that should the bush seize on the push-rod it can be carried upwardly to allow the valve to close. A pilot reclamation system energizes the combustion air blower of a heater before the pilot flame is completely extinguished from lack of oxygen so that the oxygen supply for the pilot flame is replenished. Sensing means for sensing the temperature of the pilot light is operatively connected to switch means for energizing the combustion air blower. The temperature sensing means includes plunger means which move the switch means to close a circuit for the blower motor when the temperature of the pilot light falls below a predetermined level. When the oxygen supply to the pilot light is replenished and the temperature of the pilot light rises above a predetermined level, the temperature sensing means allows the switch to move to the open position.

If the current fails the rod can be displaced to open the valve by pushing inwardly a plate 32. The plate remains in this position because the bimetal strip 16 applies the plate against the sides of guide slots in the valve casing. When the current returns the valve is held open by the heated bimetal strip and the plate is returned by a spring 33.

A spark igniter is programmed to ignite a pilot burner which in turn ignites a main burner. A flame rod is used to confirm to the control circuitry that pilot ignition has taken place before the main gas valve is opened. An initially closed timing control circuit opens the pilot gas valve but times out if ignition of the pilot does not occur within a predetermined time. Other circuit interlocking features are provided for overall fail-safe operation.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A self-contained electric igniter in which the ignition pilot is actuated by a rechargeable battery to supply energy for the spark provided by an igniter. All energy for opening the valve of the main gas valve is supplied by a millivolt thermopile generator which together with additional thermopiles charges the battery. A diode is located in the battery charging line to prevent reverse flow of current from the battery to the thermopiles. The system has a safety valve which closes off flow of gas into the system in the event the pilot burner fails to ignite and a flame switch which closes off the flow of current to the main gas valve and consequent flow of gas into the system in the event the pilot burner is extinguished. It also has a damper control system which is closed when the system is shut off to reduce stand-by losses and conserve energy.

An electric gas shutoff valve is disclosed. The electric gas shutoff valve includes a breaker body with an inlet channel and an exhaust channel. A gas breaker panel is pivotally connected to a chamber in the breaker body. One end of the gas breaker panel is a channel block while a connection portion on the other end thereof is hooked with a vertical hook mounted in the breaker body. A gas detection unit is arranged outside the breaker body and coupled to a control unit. The control unit is coupled to a drive unit. Once the gas detection unit detects abnormal gas flow during leak caused by pipeline breakage or extinguished gas flame, the control unit activates the drive unit and the vertical hook is further driven to be released from the gas breaker panel. Thus the channel block blocks the exhaust channel and the gas supply is off.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas burner control system including a main burner and a pilot burner for igniting the main burner wherein the pilot burner is ignited only when the thermostat is calling for heat and wherein a normally closed bimetal operated safety switch is effective to provide a trial ignition period for igniting the pilot burner. An electrical resistance heater for effecting open-ing of the safety switch is in the gate circuit of a solid state switch and is energized in the absence of pilot burner flame. The solid-state switch, when conducting, is effective to complete an electrical circuit through the safety switch to open a first valve and initiate gas flow to the pilot burner. When pilot burner flame exists, the resistance heater is de-energized, the first valve is held open by means including a switch responsive to gas pressure downstream from the first valve, and a second valve, fluidically in series with the first valve and controlling the flow of gas to the main burner, is opened.

If a flame is applied to member 1 the latter expands and closes valve 5, 6, so that pressure builds up in chamber 17 and valve 13 opens to supply fuel to the burner. Any loss of pressure from pipe 22 or from the flame-sensing device will lead to closure of the main valve. In a burner installation Fig. 2, gas is supplied to an oven burner 30 from supply 31 via a tap and thermostat 32, a clock controlled valve 33 and a flame failure valve 34 having a heat sensitive unit 36. [Also in Division F4] The pilot valve closure member 5<SP>1</SP> of a gas water heater is urged to closure by a spring 6 (Fig. 1) and has a depending stem 11 which abuts a lever 7 pivoted at 8, the lever carrying the housing 12 of a micro-switch connected to the solenoid (not shown) of the main gas valve, and contacting the stem 10<SP>1</SP> of the armature 3 of an electromagnet 2. A second lever 7<SP>1</SP> is pivoted at 8 and supports the plunger 13 of the mioroswitch and abuts the stem 4 of a control knob; a spring 9 urges the two levers apart but is weaker than spring 6. In operation, when the knob is depressed the two levers rotate without relative movement, the armature abuts the electromagnet and the pilot valve opens (Fig. 2). The heat of the pilot flame acts on a thermoelectric device to energize the magnet and when the knob is released lever 7<SP>1</SP> returns under the action of spring 9 and the plunger 13 allows the microswitch to close thereby opening the main valve. Should the pilot flame be extinguished, the pilot valve closes under the action of spring 6 and the lever system returns to the position of Fig. 1 to open the microswitch. In alternative embodiments (Fig. 3, not shown), the housing 12 is mounted on lever 7<SP>1</SP> and the plunger 13 abuts lever 7; alternatively the levers extend beyond their pivot and one or two microswitches are provided on the extensions.
