In the heat treatment zone the walls are fabricated of refractory wallboard or tile elements and includes an austenitic foil material applied to the hot face of the refractory in an interlocking or shiplap structure so as to wrap and surround the refractory board and prevent refractory spalling from entering the soaking zone and thereby contaminating the ware. It is important that in the entire process system including the preheat, soaking and post-heat zones, spalling and dust be minimized.

A sorting apparatus comprising a feed , an implement , and wear tiles wherein:the feed delivers a material to be sorted to the implement, the implement sorts the material into at least two groups based on one or more characteristics of the material including a color parameter, one of the at least two groups comprising desired product, andthe wear tiles cover a portion of the sorting apparatus to substantially prevent the material from contacting the covered portion of the sorting apparatus during sorting, the wear tiles having a color sufficiently different from a color of the desired product such that the wear tiles, or portions or pieces thereof, that may mix with the material are sorted by the implement from the desired product.2. The sorting apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the color of the wear tiles permeates substantially an entire mass of the wear tiles.3. The invention relates to a method for continuously annealing aluminium alloy sheet at final thickness by continuously moving heat-treatable AlMgSi aluminium alloy sheet through a continuous annealing furnace arranged to heat the moving aluminium sheet to a set soaking temperature (TSET) in the temperature range of 500°C to 590°C, the continuous annealing furnace has an entry section and an exit section, the moving aluminium sheet moves substantially horizontally through the continuous annealing furnace, and wherein the moving aluminium sheet is rapidly cooled on leaving the exit section, and wherein before or near the entry section of the continuous annealing furnace the moving aluminium sheet is pre-heated to a temperature of 5°C to 100°C below the TSET using an average heat-up rate as function of the sheet thickness of at least Y = -31.ln(X) + 50, wherein Y is the heat- up rate in °C/sec and X is the sheet thickness in mm.

The jacks periodically raise the work pieces to be independent of the oven housing which is then hydraulically moved forward, the vertical jacks replace the work pieces and the oven is returned to its origin. The pieces are thus cyclically advanced through the oven by a device which may be fully automated and inexpensive in construction.

The invention also relates to a system for carrying out (6) said method.

The heating arrangement is used for heating workpieces by reheat furnace of a rolling mill. The arrangement incorporates a casting process for casting of the workpieces to be rolled and also the rolling train connected directly by the heating process. Wire blooms are supported across fixed longitudinal girders in a preheating furnace. Two sets of moving girders, offset relative to each other, and overlapping at the middle of the furnace, move the blooms along. Each set lifts only those blooms in its own half of the furnace at any time. The moving girders in one half of the furnace are aligned with the fixed girders in the other half, and retract into slots below their level. They are raised and lowered in sets alternately by carriages moving on opposed inclined planes, and moved longitudinally by tie-bars connected to a balance beam. Dividing the moving girders into two sets saves a considerable amt. of energy. As only half the furnace load is moved at a time the structure can be lighter, and as the two halves are balanced, and as one is raised the other is lowered, effectively only the half load plus an allowance for mechanical losses has to be raised and moved.

Drive unit for conveying heated material through a furnace, consists of a double-acting hydraulic cylinder contg. a piston connected to the conveyor and a distributor with outlet pipe (a) feeding the cylinder, and outlet pipe (b) feeding the piston side of the cylinder; the distributor inlet is connected to a source of oil under pressure, and a non-return valve is fitted in pipe (b). A by-pass is provided between pipe (a) and the section of pipe (b), between the non-return valve and the cylinder, the by-pass being fitted with a pilot non-return valve opposing the flow of oil from (b) to (a) when the oil pressure is below a specified value, and a control valve is provided to ensure flow when the specified value is exceeded. Used e.g. on walking beam- or moving hearth-furnaces. A smaller, simpler hydraulic circuit is used cf. conventional circuits.
