A cartridge for non-lethal applications comprises a posterior portion 1 which extends axially to provide a cylindrical casing. An anterior portion comprises of a nose portion 2 with a centrally located recess 8 for receiving a projectile, and an axially extending piston 3 which is slidably engaged in the chamber defined by the cylindrical casing 1. A posterior primer 4 is located to the end of the posterior portion which is most distal to the nose portion 2. An anterior primer 5 sits just behind the recess 8 of the nose portion 2. A plastic striker is located in the chamber defined by the cylindrical casing 1 and comprises of a sealing flange portion 6 and striking nose portion 7. The striking nose portion 7 locates snugly but slidably in a second chamber provided axially within the piston 3. In use, the posterior primer 4 releases gaseous product which drives the striker 7 against the anterior primer 5 whilst simultaneously causing telescopic extension of the cartridge which in turn results in recycling of a host firearm.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cartridge case 68 for a cased telescoped ammunition round 10. Cartridge case 68 includes a hollow cylindrical casing 12 fabricated from a material which undergoes elastic deformation when round 10 is fired from a gun, a rear seal 20 and a front seal 22. A control tube is secured to rear seal 20 and a primer is mounted to be in communication with the interior of control tube 24. Casing 12 has an axis of symmetry 18 which is also the axis of symmetry of round 10, and control tube 24. Seals 20, 22 each have side walls 48, 48' in which crimp grooves 56, 56' are formed. Each crimp groove includes a cam surface 58, 58'. Rear and front portions 14, 16 of casing 12 are crimped into grooves 58, 58'. A projectile 26 provided with a booster piston 28 is mounted within round 10 with piston 28 being located within control tube 24. The main propellant charge 38 is positioned around control tube 24 and round 26, and a booster charge is positioned with control tube 24. When round 10 is fired, axial growth of casing 12 forces portion 14, 16 to ride up cam surfaces 58, 58' expanding them. When the pressure within casing 68 returns to normal, the expanded parts of portions 14, 16 act to retract end seals 20, 22.

The marker projectile is a thin envelope of expanded polystyrene, made in two separate parts and contg. a pigment powder. To enable such an object to withstand a firing charge sufficient to project it with fair accuracy, it is put in a light metal cup, which is fired with it, but held back captive on a cord fastened to the base of the cartridge. The projectile sits on a block of plastic inside the metal cup, and is held in it by a waxed card but across the mouth. The exterior of the metal cup fits the inside of the cartridge closely, and the cartridge is made long enough to guide the trajectory of the cup (and also the marker projectile it contains) when the cartridge is fired.

In embodiments, the propellant driving the projectile does not provide enough gas pressure to recycle the weapon and the telescoping cartridge supplements the needed power for recycling sufficient to accomplish the recycling. The invention include the telescoping cartridge providing a projectile with lethal energy and recycle capability for gas operated rifles. The subsonic cartridge may have at least 80 ft lbs of energy and operates subsonically.

The inventive cartridge comprises a cartridge case, a powder charge, an ignition element embodied in the form of an electrical ignition fuse and a gas generator pressed into the cartridge case, in addition to a traumatic element embodied in the form of a rubber bullet provided with a metallic core which prevents the extraction of the bullet. The bullet is rolled inside the body of the gas generator. The electrical ignition fuse and the gas generator can be embodied in the form of a single part or be embodied separately. The cartridge case can be made of a high resistant aluminium alloy or reinforced plastic material. The inventive traumatic element for a barrelless weapon is made of a flexible metal and embodied in the form of a bullet provided with a metallic core which prevents the extraction of the bullet. The bullet consists of two parts, i.e. the head part and the tail part connected to each other with the aid of a strap. The tail part of the bullet has an external diameter which is less than the diameter of the head part. The bullet can be made of rubber. The invention excludes the possibility of bad wounding by the cartridge and the bullet at a distance equal to or greater than 1 meter and ensures a stopping effect at a distance equal to or less than 10 meters.

A new hybrid gun barrel can be successfully used with modern hotter propellants without unacceptable erosion of the breech section of the gun barrel and while retaining the accuracy and ballistic characteristics of a fully rifled gun barrel. The gun barrel comprises a smooth bore breech section and a longer gain twist rifled muzzle section. The smooth bore breech section can better withstand the high heat and pressure of modern hotter propellants than prior art rifled breech sections. The smooth bore breech section will always be less than one-third the total length of the gun barrel and preferably less than one-fifth the total length of the gun barrel. It can be made of a different material than the rifled muzzle section and can be coated with a material harder than the rest of the gun barrel.

The present device disclosed is a reduced energy training cartridge for use in a straight blowback operated firearm. Prior art reduced energy ammunition casings are often made with brass. However, brass is relatively expensive for reduced energy cartridge case applications. Thus, there exists a need for a reduced energy training round which employs inexpensive materials while simultaneously providing a simple and robust design which can easily be manufacture on a large scale. The present device comprises a barrel with firing chamber, the cartridge comprising a cartridge case (20) being defined by a rear portion (21 ) with an external groove (22), a front portion having a velocity reduction structure (30) and a wall with an outer surface and an inner surface, a sabot (50) slideably engaged within the cartridge case, the sabot having a rear portion (56) with an outside diameter substantially equal to the inside diameter of the inner surface of the cartridge case and which contains a gas sealing ( 51 ) and braking structure and a primer (40) disposed in the rear portion of the cartridge case where, upon percussion of the primer, the cartridge case rapidly slides relative to the sabot until such point when the velocity reduction structure of the cartridge case engages with the sealing and braking structure of the sabot, thereby stopping further movement of the cartridge case relative to the sabot. The present device also contemplates using a metallic case in combination with a non-metallic or polymer sabot.

A method of operating a gas operated automatic or semi-automatic weapon that has a bolt that locks by a partial rotation of the bolt with respect to a bolt carrier, the bolt carrier in communication with a gas port on the barrel of the weapon, the method comprising utilizing the gas pressure from a cartridge received from a port in the barrel to unlock the bolt, and utilizing the expansion of a telescoping cartridge in the chamber to recycle the weapon after the bolt is unlocked. In embodiments the cartridge is a 5.56 mm cartridge. In embodiments, the propellant driving the projectile does not provide enough gas pressure to recycle the weapon and the telescoping cartridge supplements the needed power for recycling sufficient to accomplish the recycling. The invention include the telescoping cartridge providing a projectile with lethal energy and recycle capability for gas operated rifles. The subsonic cartridge may have at least 80 ft lbs of energy and operates subsonically.
