An adjustable measuring and marking device is provided. The device has a lower portion with a bottom end and an upper end and an upper portion with a bottom end and an upper end. The upper portion telescopically interconnects with the lower portion. Measurement intervals, such as inches, are marked along the upper and lower sections so that one can use the device as a measuring apparatus. Measurements can be read at the upper end of the bottom portion, off the top portion, in inches, as well as in feet and inches. A friction fit exists between the upper and lower sections so that a measurement obtained by extending the upper section from the lower section so that the entire device is positioned between two points, can easily be transferred to another location, as the relative position of the upper and lower sections are maintained by the friction fit. Overextending the upper portion out of the lower portion is prevented by a locking pin device. A plurality of markers can be attached to the device, at desired locations therealong, for marking desired locations on a surface. Such markings are accomplished by placing the device at a desired location, and twisting one's wrist to move the plurality of marking devices against a surface to place marks thereon.

[Class 97 (iii)] A mensuration device comprises a body portion provided with a set of graduation marks and an index portion which is housed in a recess in the body portion and is movable or interchangeable to bring one of a number of sets of numerals into conjunction with the graduation marks thus providing a number of alternative scales in one instrument. As shown in Fig. 2, the body portion a has at one edge an inclined surface carrying the graduation marks, at the other edge a raised lip, and, between the two, a recess for the index portion b. The latter is of hexagonal cross-section, has six sets of differently spaced numerals one set on each face, and is held in the recess by springs c engaging annular grooves at the ends of the portion b. Locating pieces cl also engage the grooves in the portion b and ensure that the latter is accurately positioned relatively to the graduation marks. The portion b may be raised from the recess against the action of the spring c, turned to bring the desired face to the top and dropped back into the recess. In a modification in which alternative graduation marks may be used, the graduation marks are on an interchangeable part adapted to be attached to the body portion a by dovetail joints, clips, press studs or by utilizing the resilience of the part to spring it into engagement with studs on the body portion a. In a further modification the body portion is provided with a set of graduations on both edges and each set is provided with a rotatable index portion. The body portion may be in two separate strips with a rotatable index portion against the inner surface of each, the two strips being enclosed at the ends in caps and pressed apart by springs.
