An industrial meter 123 is described that has wireless communication circuitry 125 for communicating with a remote communication device 103. A passive repeater device is also provided that allows the wireless communication circuitry of the industrial meter to continue to communicate with the remote communication device when the meter device is positioned in a location where direct communication between the wireless communication circuitry and the remote communication device is not possible (such as for example when the industrial meter is located underground. The passive repeater comprises a first wireless coupler 111 in close proximity to the meter, a second wireless coupler 107 for communication with the remote communication device and an electrical conductor 109 connecting the two wireless couplers. The wireless signal may be a near-field (NFC), inductive, electromagnetic, capacitive, GSM, UMTS or any other wireless signal. The remote communication device may be a mobile telephone.

A method of determining the utility consumption of each appliance in a collection of appliances by using periodic measurements of aggregate utility consumption of all appliances in the collection, is disclosed. The method comprises of determining the normal utility consumption of various modes of each appliance, fixing a measurement interval, and then measuring aggregate utility consumption at periodic intervals. In each interval, we first determine if the change in aggregate utility consumption in an interval is due to change in status (ON or OFF) of one of the appliances. Otherwise we determine if the change in aggregate consumption is due to a change in status of a pair of appliances. Otherwise, we determine if change in aggregate consumption is due to change in status of a triplet of appliances.

The invented method specifically uses external outputs of the utility revenue meter, the pulse outputs or optical reader, acquires and transmits high frequency telemetry in less than 30 seconds inclusive down to 1 second. Other approaches to reading the utility revenue meter focus on pulse counting or use of a predetermined time interval. In the current embodiment of the invention, the device measures the timing of each pulse which led to accuracy within a few seconds.

First and second ultrasonic transducers are arranged at the flow tube for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic signals transmitted through the fluid and operated by a flow measurement sub-circuit for generating a signal indicative of the flow rate of the fluid. A noise measurement sub-circuit operates a sensor arranged at the flow tube for detection of acoustic signals of the flow tube, and being arranged to generate a signal indicative of a noise level of the flow tube accordingly. This sensor may comprise a separate transducer, or the sensor may be constituted by one or both of the first and second ultrasonic transducers. The consumption meter may communicate data representative of the noise level via a communication module along with data consumed amount of water, heat etc. Such consumer noise level measurement at the consumer site allows collection of noise level data to assist in locating fluid leakages in a fluid supply pipe system. 1.
