The method uses a radar level gauge to measure the level of the floating roof and a level measuring device to measure the level of the medium. The method includes recording the level of the floating roof during a defined time interval that comprises some filling/emptying cycles of the medium, recording the level of the medium during said time interval, determining the deviations between the level of the medium and the corresponding level of the floating roof, centering the deviations between the level of the medium and the level of the floating roof reduced by the thickness of the floating roof with the corresponding level data, and generating an alert message when the centered deviations exceed a tolerance threshold.

The float carries a magnet which actuates a reed switch when the level of fluid in the float chamber reaches a predetermined level. In order to diagnose a function, the specified value of the equilibrium volume of the displacement element is changed, and the resulting change in the length of the measuring wire is ascertained on the basis of the constant equilibrium state of the resulting weight.

The resulting weight is specified, and the specified resulting weight is kept constant by correspondingly changing the length of the measuring wire in the equilibrium state. The fill state of the filling material is ascertained using the length of the lowered measuring wire. In order to diagnose a function, the specified value of the equilibrium volume of the displacement element is changed, and the resulting change in the length of the measuring wire is ascertained on the basis of the constant equilibrium state of the resulting weight.

A method for a fuel system comprises receiving a first indication of inconsistency in a fuel level indicator output during a fuel consumption cycle, receiving a second indication of inconsistency in a fuel level indicator output during a refueling event, and indicating electrical degradation of the fuel level indicator responsive to the first and second indications of inconsistency indicating coincident ranges of inconsistency for the fuel level indicator output. By gauging the consistency of a fuel level indicator output during both upward and downward travel, electrical degradation may be distinguished from mechanical degradation. In this way, a range of inconsistency may be determined, and a reported fuel level adjusted while the fuel level indicator output is within the range of inconsistency.
