Apparatus for Continuous Weight Monitoring of Beehives

An apparatus and method for continuously monitoring the weight of an object are disclosed. The apparatus does not obstruct a central portion of the bottom of the object being monitored, and is especially well-suited for monitoring the weight of a beehive. In the illustrative embodiment, a ring-shaped fluid-filled bladder is sandwiched between a ring-shaped top surface and a ring-shaped base, and a pressure hose connects the bladder to a pressure gauge. Beehive weight data can be obtained in a continuous fashion, without requiring any moving of the beehive or of the apparatus, and without any other type of disruption. Moreover, the apparatus provides a stable platform that keeps the beehive immobile during monitoring, which is beneficial for the health of the colony. Advantageously, the apparatus can be constructed from inexpensive, off-the-shelf components and materials, and is capable of obtaining accurate measurements over a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions.

The ball assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hitch ball is rotatable about the ball post.3. The ball assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a gap between the ball end of the ball post and the hitch ball.4. The ball assembly of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the exterior surface of the ball post forms a securing feature to engage the ball mount and facilitate attachment of the ball assembly to the ball mount.5. A system is described for determining the physical properties of a sample of matter, including the volume, mass and density of the sample. The system uses a single chamber (12), wherein the sample is weighed by a weighing device (14). The chamber is pressurized by a gas of known properties and purity for which the thermodynamic pressure-density-temperature surface is known. As the pressure regulator (40) controls the chamber pressure. As the pressure inside the chamber is changed by regulating the pressure, the apparent weight of the sample, the fluid temperature (36), and the fluid pressure (32) are measured and recorded. A significant feature of the system is the recording of a plurality of weight and fluid density measurements as the pressure in the chamber is changed. The plurality of fluid density measurements results in an improved statistical measure of the sample density. Additionally, the determination of weight at many different densities captures any possible non-linear effects as would be evidenced in compressible media. Thus, the method and apparatus may be used to determine the compressibility or porosity of an object.

The system provides for the dynamic weighing of a loaded container by controllably directing hydraulic flow through a bypass chamber (51) of a two-way valve (42). An analog output signal is generated by a hydraulic pressure transducer (53) fluidly communicating with the two-way valve or by a tensiometer (24) mounted on the arms of the lifting device (14). The two-way valve (42) further provides a second bypass chamber (54) which receives fluid under gravity from the lift circuit line (40) of the hydraulic cylinder (18) for controllably lowering the lifting device (14). The pressure transducer (53) or tensiometer (24) generate an analog signal proportionate to the weight being lowered and whereby the hydraulic fluid is returned to the reservoir of the hydraulic system independently and downstream of the main operating valve (33).
