Portable personal weighing scales (10) have a platform (12, 14, 28) in the form of a gel-filled cushion made of a foam material. This is rectangular and very low in height (16). Within the gel is a pressure sensor which on one edge of the cushion (22) is attached by a cable to a cylindrical bolster (24) containing the digital weight display (26). The pressure change in the gel when a person stands on the scales is directly related to the weight of the person and is detected by the sensor, converted to a measure of weight and transmitted to the display. For ease of carrying, the scales can be rolled up with the display bolster inside. This helps to protect the sensor and display from damage as well as ensuring that the scales take up little space in luggage. They are also very light in weight.

The apparatus does not obstruct a central portion of the bottom of the object being monitored, and is especially well-suited for monitoring the weight of a beehive. In the illustrative embodiment, a ring-shaped fluid-filled bladder is sandwiched between a ring-shaped top surface and a ring-shaped base, and a pressure hose connects the bladder to a pressure gauge. Beehive weight data can be obtained in a continuous fashion, without requiring any moving of the beehive or of the apparatus, and without any other type of disruption. Moreover, the apparatus provides a stable platform that keeps the beehive immobile during monitoring, which is beneficial for the health of the colony. Advantageously, the apparatus can be constructed from inexpensive, off-the-shelf components and materials, and is capable of obtaining accurate measurements over a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions.

[Also in Group XVIII] A pneumatic pressure transmissing device comprises a chamber with inlet means for admitting air under a pressure greater than that to be transmitted, an outlet duct in communication with the inlet and downstream thereof and a pneumatic pressure relief opening closed by a loose cover which is acted on by a damper to prevent it from vibrating and which is also acted on by a variable force, e.g. from a weighing machine (see Group XVIII), applied as a thrust along a line of action in alignment with the resultant of the pneumatic pressure in the chamber acting on the cover. When a valve 6 is opened air under pressure, from a source 5, is admitted to the pressure chamber 1 until the downward force is overcome and the cover 11 lifts, allowing air to escape between an annular projection 13, on the cover, and its seating 13a. The movement of the cover is damped by a disc 14 connected by a bolt 15 to the cover and submerged in oil in the bottom of the chamber. When there is equilibrium between the pressure and the downward thrust the valve 6 is closed gradually until the flow through the chamber is very small, under which condition the pressure in the outlet pipe 8 equals that in the chamber 1 and is in linear relation to the variable applied force. The pressure is shown by a gauge 9, calibrated to read directly in force measurement units. Alternatively, the cover 11 may be below the chamber 1, resting on the pivot point 19, its recess 12 forming the main part of the chamber.

The apparatus does not obstruct a central portion of the bottom of the object being monitored, and is especially well-suited for monitoring the weight of a beehive. In the illustrative embodiment, a ring-shaped fluid-filled bladder is sandwiched between a ring-shaped top surface and a ring-shaped base, and a pressure hose connects the bladder to a pressure gauge. Beehive weight data can be obtained in a continuous fashion, without requiring any moving of the beehive or of the apparatus, and without any other type of disruption. Moreover, the apparatus provides a stable platform that keeps the beehive immobile during monitoring, which is beneficial for the health of the colony. Advantageously, the apparatus can be constructed from inexpensive, off-the-shelf components and materials, and is capable of obtaining accurate measurements over a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions.
