The description relates to a process for separating mixtures of microscopically small dielectric particles in suspension and a device for implementing the process. Prior art separation processes separate particle mixtures according to the differing mobilities of their components. This requires extensive measures to suppress convection in the suspension. In the process of the invention, the particle mixture is forced onto tracks by dielectrophoretic forces or by the flow of the suspension medium. An additional force which, for specific particle types, offsets the force driving the particles onto tracks, separates particles of these types out of the mixture. An electrophoresis apparatus, comprises a cartridge configured to be removably mounted in the apparatus, and a separation membrane positioned in the cartridge. The separation membrane has a first side along which a first flow path defined in a first grid element and a second side along which a second flow path defined in a second grid element is provided. Restriction membranes separate buffer flow from the first flow path and the second flow path. The apparatus includes connection blocks which house electrodes and inlets and outlets for buffer flow and sample flows. The cartridge is removable from the connection blocks for replacement with another cartridge.

The device is comprised of a conduit containing a monolithic enantioselective separation medium, and may be, for example, a capillary tube or a microchannel in a substrate. The enantioselective separation medium is prepared by copolymerization of (a1) an ionizable chiral monomer or (a2) a chiral monomer and an ionizable comonomer, along with (b) a crosslinking comonomer and (c) a polymerization initiator, in (d) a porogenic solvent. Following ionization, the enantioselective separation medium serves as a charge carrier as well as a chiral separation medium, and further acts as an electroosmotic pump to facilitate the flow of a fluid. The invention also provides methods for preparing the enantioselective separation medium and electrochromatographic devices fabricated therewith.

An apparatus for extracting and concentrating bioagents within a continuously flowing fluid medium includes a flow channel fluid inlet, in which bioagents are concentrated from three dimensions to a two-dimensional transport layer in a preconcentration area. Traveling wave grids cause the preconcentrated bioagents to migrate to one side of the flow channel and then to an extraction port. Each of the traveling wave grids includes a substrate, a collection of closely spaced and parallel electrically conductive electrodes extending across said substrate, and a collection of buses providing electrical communication with the collection of conductive electrodes. A voltage controller provides a multiphase electrical signal to the collection of buses and electrodes of the traveling wave grids. Fluid exits through an outlet port.

The present disclosure is directed to a novel apparatus and novel methods for the separation, characterization, and manipulation of matter. In particular, the invention combines the use of frequency-dependent dielectric and conductive properties of particulate matter and solubilized matter with the properties of the suspending and transporting medium to discriminate and separate such matter. The apparatus includes a chamber having at least one electrode element and at least one inlet and one output port into which cells are introduced and removed from the chamber. Matter carried through the chamber in a fluid stream is then displaced within the fluid by a dielectrophoretic (DEP) force caused by the energized electrode. Following displacement within the fluid, matter travels through the chamber at velocities according to the velocity profile of the chamber. After the matter has transmitted through the chamber, it exits at the opposite end of the chamber at a characteristic position. Methods according to the invention involve using the apparatus for discriminating and separating matter for research, diagnosis of a condition, and therapeutic purposes. Examples of such methods may include separation of mixtures of cells, such as cancer cells from normal cells, separation of parasitized erythrocytes from normal erythrocytes, separation of nucleic acids, and others.

A micropump that pumps liquid using electrothermally-induced flow is described, along with a corresponding self-regulating pump and infusion pump. The micropump has applications in microfluidic systems, such as biochips. The self-regulating infusion pump is useful for administration of large and small volumes of liquids such as drugs to patients and can be designed for a wide range of flow rates by combining multiple micropumps in one infusion pump system. The micropump uses electrode sequences on opposing surfaces of a flow chamber that are staggered with respect to each other. The opposing surfaces include staggered electrodes that have the same phase and same electrode sequence. As such electrodes with the same phase are staggered and not eclipsed.
