Disclosed are a method, system and apparatus for controlling the movement of animals, and in some aspects, the virtual herding or steering of animals over large areas of land. In some aspects, the animal is steered towards a desired region when the animal is out of the desired region. In some aspects, the animal is steered towards a reference, which can be made to move along a path, thus leading the animal along the path from a starting point to a finish point. In some implementations, a tightly-coupled elevation-assisted location estimate can be calculated based on digital elevation model (DEM) elevation measurements and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data.
