A display may have a backlight unit that provides backlight illumination. The backlight unit may include a light guide that distributes light throughout the display and an electrically adjustable lens array. The lens array may have lenses such as liquid lenses or liquid crystal lenses. By adjusting the lenses in the lens array, the angles of rays of backlight from the backlight unit may be adjusted to adjust the angle-of-view of the display. The angle-of-view of the display may also be adjusted using an electrically controllable filter layer. The electrically controllable filter layer may have a liquid crystal layer or a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer that can be controlled using electrodes. When the electrodes apply signals to the electrically controllable filter layer, portions of the filter layer change to a dark or translucent state and restrict the angle-of-view of the display.

The invention also discloses a liquid crystal display device having the edge type backlight module. The COF of the invention is disposed on a portion of the second backlight sources with a lower temperature, so that the COF is in a lower temperature condition, thereby improving its reliability.

A direct view display provides a light modulating panel and a backlight including first and second sets of spectral emitters. The first set of spectral emitters generate a first light bundle and the second set of spectral emitters generate a second light bundle. Several modes of operation may be provided including (1) an advanced 2D mode, (2) an enhanced color gamut mode employing simultaneous illumination of the first and second set of spectral emitters, (3) a privacy screen mode, (4) a channel multiplexed mode, and (5) a stereoscopic image mode. The latter three modes utilize the first and second set of spectral emitters to alternately illuminate a portion of the light modulating panel. Images and representations generated by the direct view display operating in the latter three modes are viewed using appropriate eyewear having filters with passband characteristics to transmit the respective light bundle.

The LC cell ( 304 ) is interposed between the first dichroic polarizer ( 300 ) and the specular reflective polarizer ( 302 ). The diffusive reflective polarizer ( 306 ) is interposed between the LC cell ( 304 ) and the specular reflective polarizer ( 302 ). Related methods are also set forth.
