The developing units are retained in the retaining member. The toner cartridges have one-on-one correspondence to the developing units and are configured to be mountable in or detachable from the retaining member when the retaining member is located at the pulled-out position. Each toner cartridge includes a casing formed with a cartridge opening, and a cartridge shutter configured to be movable between an open position for opening the cartridge opening and a closed position for closing the cartridge opening. The operation unit is provided in the retaining member and configured to be pivotally movable in an imaginary plane parallel to the first direction and the second direction. The operation unit is interlocked with the cartridge shutter while the toner cartridge is mounted in the retaining member to move the cartridge shutter between the open position and the closed position in accordance with the pivotal movement of the operation unit.

A measurement arrangement detects a thickness of at least one region of the toner image layer inked on the surface of the photoconductor as a real value. The determined real value is compared with a desired value determined by a preset layer thickness, and a strength of the electrical field is controlled dependent on a deviation of the determined real value from the desired value.

Fixing devices including extended-life components and methods of fixing marking material to a substrate are provided. An exemplary embodiment of the fixing devices for fixing toner to a substrate in printing includes a first fixing member including a first surface; a thermal energy source for heating the first surface of the first fixing member to a fixing temperature; and a second fixing member including a second surface. The first surface and the second surface form a fixing nip configured to receive a substrate including a surface and marking material comprising toner disposed on the surface. The first fixing member and the second fixing member are operable to apply a pressure of at least about 300 psi to the substrate and toner and to heat the toner to a sufficiently-high temperature, at the fixing nip, to fix the toner to the substrate.

The associated movements of the lower unit and the upper unit are released at a position where the pressing plate of the upper unit is moved, and the lower unit primarily returns to its initial state and the upper unit returns to its initial state subsequently.

Fixing belts, fixing devices and methods of making fixing belts are provided. An exemplary embodiment of the fixing belts includes an inner layer comprising a first surface forming an inner surface of the fixing belt and a second surface opposite to the first surface, the inner layer comprising a first polymer; an intermediate layer overlying the second surface of the inner layer, the intermediate layer including a third surface, a first end face and a second end face opposite to the first end face, the intermediate layer comprising silicone rubber; and an outer layer including a fourth surface forming an outer surface of the fixing belt, the outer layer overlying the third surface, the first end face, the second end face and portions of the second surface disposed outward from the first end face and second end face, the outer layer comprising a second polymer. The outer layer seals and protects the intermediate layer from exposure to a liquid release agent applied to the fourth surface.

The post-processing device which performs a post-processing operation for a discharged printing medium with an image formed thereon, includes: an image forming unit which forms an image on the printing medium; a medium feeding unit which feeds the printing medium to the image forming unit; a discharging unit which is provided in the post-processing device and discharges the printing medium with the image formed thereon; a medium alignment unit which aligns the printing medium for post-processing for the discharged printing medium; a user interface unit which receives an instruction form a user; and a control unit which controls a width of the medium alignment unit to correspond to a width of the discharged printing medium based on a setting value for the medium feeding unit, which is input through the user interface unit, when the size of the printing medium loaded on the medium feeding unit is not detected. With this configuration, it is possible to control a width of a medium alignment unit for post-processing using a setting value set for a multipurpose cassette having no size sensor, so that printing media having different sizes can be properly aligned.

An image forming apparatus which forms an image by forming an electrostatic latent image on a photosensitive member with a laser beam, developing the electrostatic latent image with a developer to obtain a developer image, and transferring the developer image to a sheet, the image forming apparatus including: a light source which outputs the laser beam for exposing the photosensitive member; a PLL circuit which generates a multiplied clock that is obtained by multiplying a reference clock; a pulse-width modulating circuit which outputs a pulse-width-modulated signal based on image data and the multiplied clock in order to drive the light source; and a CPU which obtains image data to be input to the pulse-width modulating circuit and, when it is unnecessary to output the pulse-width-modulated signal based on the obtained image data, controls the PLL circuit so as not to generate the multiplied clock.
