The operation unit is interlocked with the cartridge shutter while the toner cartridge is mounted in the retaining member to move the cartridge shutter between the open position and the closed position in accordance with the pivotal movement of the operation unit.

An electrical field is generated that exerts at least one force on a portion of the electrically charged toner particles between the roller and the applicator element. A strength of the electrical field is varied to adjust a layer thickness of a layer of the toner particles transferred onto the surface of the applicator element and thus to adjust a thickness of the toner image layer on the photoconductor. A measurement arrangement detects a thickness of at least one region of the toner image layer inked on the surface of the photoconductor as a real value. The determined real value is compared with a desired value determined by a preset layer thickness, and a strength of the electrical field is controlled dependent on a deviation of the determined real value from the desired value.

A fixing device includes a rotary fuser member, a rotary pressure member, a first media stripper, and a second media stripper. The rotary fuser member is subjected to heating. The rotary pressure member is pressed against the fuser member to form a fixing nip therebetween through which a recording medium is passed in a media conveyance direction under heat and pressure as the fuser and pressure members rotate together. The first media stripper includes at least one pneumatic nozzle disposed adjacent to the fuser member to direct compressed gas toward the fixing nip along the fuser member for stripping the recording medium from the fuser member. The second media stripper includes at least one contact finger disposed in contact with the pressure member to slide against the pressure member during rotation for stripping the recording medium from the pressure member.

A developing device includes: a developer holding body including: a hollow development rotary body which is opposed to an image holding body capable of holding a toner image and has a smooth surface whose surface roughness is lower than or equal to 5 μm in terms of maximum height; and a magnet member which is fixedly housed in the development rotary body and in which a plurality of magnetic poles are arranged alongside its periphery, the developer holding body operating in such a manner that developer containing toner and carrier is held on the development rotary body by magnetic force produced by the magnetic poles of the magnet member as the development rotary body is rotated; a layer regulating rotary body as defined herein; and a development driving device as defined herein.

In one aspect a method comprises the steps of applying a first force at a first end of an auger and applying a second force at a second end of the auger with the first force and the second force being sufficient to rotate the auger against a drag exerted by a developer and a replenishment toner being moved by rotation of the auger; and, tensioning the auger along a length of the auger by urging the first end of the auger away from the second end and by urging the second end of the auger away from the first end.
