The member 7 has substantially frusto-conical portions 8, 9 united by an integral rim 10 of a diameter such that the member forms a friction-tight fit within the casing 1, and the neck portion 14 of the screw 12 fits with clearance in an aperture 3 in the casing to allow for lateral displacements ot the pivot.

A pivot bearing 5, adapted to receive a pivot 4a of a shaft 4, carries a ring 10 which rests, under the action of a spring 8, against a seating 12 formed on an end bush 3 so that the return of the pivot bearing 5 to its central position is ensured when it is displaced as a result of a shock. The spring 8 is located between a thrust-pad 9, bearing against the end of the bearing 5, and an end plug 2 of a housing 1. The ring 10 is fitted in its correct position on the bearing by means of a member 13, Fig. 2, having a central projection 13a and wall 13b having a chamfer 14 corresponding with the seating 12, and a ring 15 by means of which the ring 10 is brought into contact with the chamfer 14. In a modification, the ring 10 is mounted in a semi-cylindrical recess in the wall of the pivot bearing 5. The ring may be formed by the last convolution of the spring.

A 1-olefin polymer substrate is coated with an epoxy resin cured with a curing agent contg. at least one ester group and at least three thiol groups per molecule of formula R - O - CO - R1 - SH p (where R is C3-6 hydrocarbyl of valency p; R1 is divalent C1-8 hydrocarbyl and p is 3-6), to impart an impact resistant, hydrocarbon impermeable coating to the polyolefin. A fluid aliphatic polyamide can be added to the epoxy formulation prior to completion of curing to give a more uniform surface to the coating. The curing agent is used in amount to give thiol : epoxy ratio of 0.5:1 to 2:1. The material is suitable for gasoline tanks.

Moulding one pice, shock resistant bearings for a small scale shaft or pivot stub, where the bearing comprises an annular flange which may be supported on a seat in a well in a suitable housing and where the flange carries flexible bridges which support an offset coaxial body having a (blind) hole for locating the shaft or pivot. The face or boss of the body bears against the base of the well. The bearing is moulded in a split tool with reciprocating inserts which define the integral bridges between the housing body and its supporting flange. Used esp. for the pivots of delicate mechanisms in e.g., clocks. The bearing should be moulded of matl. resistant to cleaners or lubricating agents used for the mechanism(s) supported. The bearing mounting, made from firm but resilient plastics, has a central portion containing a bearing for a spigot and an outer wall for supporting the mounting in a rigid housing. Between the central portion and outer wall there are two intermediate walls which form together with the outer wall a concertina or 'Z' shape whereby the mounting has radial resilience. The free axial end of the outer wall and the opposite axial end of the central portions are located between end faces of the housing thereby providing axial location. A bearing block (2) of resilient plastics has a spigot (2a) which is a close fit in the inner recess (1a). The bearing block (2) has a flange (2f) which fits in the recess (1c) with a radial clearance and is secured by peening over the lip (1d). The end of the spindle (3) fits in the bore of the central portion (2c) of the bearing block (2) and is attached to the outer wall (2e) by the end flange (2d). This form of bearing block provides flexibility to resist shocks in both lateral and axial directions.

In a shock-absorbing bearing for a watch &c. a bearing body 7 is axially slidable in a bush 9 which has an internal shoulder 9a abutted by the body 7 when urged by a spring 10, and has an external flange 9b which is urged against a shoulder 1b of a housing 1 by a spring 11. Both springs abut a cap 5 which is screwably attached to the housing, and the body 7 has a recess 8 to receive a pin 3. In an embodiment, as shown in Fig. 2, a disc 23 fixed in a housing 21 limits the lateral movement of a pin 12 held in a bush 16 and engaged by a bearing 14 in an arbor 15. In an embodiment as shown in Fig. 3, a spring 25 having three equi-spaced deformed tongues 25a is inserted through recesses 28 of a housing 27 and into an annular groove therein, the spring 25 being rotated to secure it in bayonet fashion. A spring 24 which urges the bearing towards a pin abuts said spring 25. The springs 11, 22 may be replaced by coil-springs.
