In the complementary inverter circuit shown the dimensions of the transistors P 1 and N 1 are so chosen that points B and C are almost at the supply potential V DD . A pulse train VA, Fig. 9 , such as may be derived from the balance wheel of a watch, causes the capacitor 16 to charge through diode 14 during the first slightly negative portion of the wave without much change in output voltage. During negative going portions of the wave the diode charges the capacitor to the peak value of the input signal so that positive going portions switch the state of the inverter and cut-off the diode. During the positive portion the capacitor discharges slightly so that during the next negative peak the condition of the circuit reverses again, as at 94, producing an output pulse, the width of which depends upon the amount of charge lost from capacitor C between the two positive pulses. To avoid missing a small peak following a large one the capacitor voltage may be limited by a diode to the supply voltage Fig. 12 (not shown). An inverter P2, N 2 provides the output wave VD. In order to charge the capacitor 16 more quickly where transistors P and N are small the diode 14 may be replaced by an emitter-follower transistor formed by lateral CMOS construction techniques, Fig. 5 (not shown). In an electronic timepiece motor, a one-piece stator of magnetic material having a hole therethrough bounded by a circumferential sidewall and defining a pair of stator portions connected by narrow bridges having small cross sections. The narrow bridges define a magnetic circuit of high magnetic resistance between the stator portions. A non-magnetic reinforcing ring is disposed within the hole through the one-piece stator and has an outer diameter effective to insure a snug fit of the reinforcing ring with the circumferential sidewall defining the hole through the stator. The reinforcing ring imparts stiffness to the one-piece stator to prevent deformation of the bridges and the hole. The reinforcing ring has a peripheral reinforcing flange extending outwardly and with the flange bearing against the one-piece stator adjacent the hole therethrough for imparting additional stiffness to the one-piece stator. A rotor is mounted for rotation within the hole through the one-piece stator and within the reinforcing ring.

The motor comprises a rotor rotating in bearings and made as two discs. Opposite alternating magnetic poles have their field axially directed to face one another. A stator has a control winding placed between the rotor discs and a locking device for stopping the rotor in specific angular positions w.r.t. deenergised stator. The stator is made of a non-ferromagnetic material and the locking device is provided with a gear wheel arranged in the stray or scattering field of the rotor magnets near the butt end of the stator winding. This permits reduction of influence of inaccuracies in assembly upon the motor torque, localization of the magnetic flux within the motor volume and decrease of effects of external magnetic fields upon the operation of the micrometer. The stator winding is made as a series of small circular coils, or as a single coil whose shape is oval or triangular.

Motors of this type are typically used for driving battery operated clocks. The motor is contained in a casing which carries end flanges holding steel pin bearings which run in blind holes (4, 4') in the ends of the motor shaft. The shaft is a die casting formed around the ferrite rotor core and includes a driving sprocket at one end. Metal disc on the rotor serve as mechanical balancing planes. The stator windings are contained in an accurately cast assembly which also has centering rings to ensure correct positioning relative to the rotor. The electrical connections enter through one ring. A high permeability strip surrounds the windings and closes the magnetic circuit. Notches cut at each end of this strip, and equal in number to the rotor poles, are accurately placed relative to the windings to ensure correct step position.

The motor is designed to reduce the current drain on the battery. The rotor (A) is a small circular or semicircular permanent magnet of a Samurium or Platinum Cobalt material having a high flux density. The stator (ST1, ST2) consists of two polar arcs extended as coil arms (B) having windings which have a low overall thickness whilst maintaining the required number of ampere - turns, the ratio of their length being equal or greater than 4:1. Rotors for two coupled motors are made from bipolar magnets of high quality coercivity material. They are fixed to a common shaft with an angular shift of 90 degs. Each magnet is positioned between the pole pieces of half stators which are excited by two windings in series. According to this invention, there are only three line-wires a, b, c in the system, the wire c being a common return wire. The electromagnetic pole-pieces A, A<1> and B, B<1>, &c. surrounding the armature are connected in pairs successively to a source of unidirectional current X through the lines a, b alternately, by means of the contact-device S at the transmitting-station. The polar extensions of the armature M constitute leading-horns H, as shown. In order to prevent overshooting, the intermittent currents are prolonged for a second or two longer than is necessary for producing each step, while residual magnetism in the electro-magnets may prevent accidental movement of the armature between the impulses. The spindle D of the armature may be vertical, driving time-indicating or other mechanism through worm-gearing, as shown in Fig. 4.

The metal sheet (3) has a transverse slot (9) in the region adjacent to the opening (4), whose width is determined by a necessary magnetic asymmetry of the stator poles, in the same way as the shape of the axis line (10) of the slot (9), which asymmetry is sufficient to generate a predetermined starting and stopping torque of the motor. The invention can be used in time measuring apparatuses and in automatic systems.

The motor rotor 3 begins to rotate at a point 14, Fig. 3 and will have rotated through a predetermined angle by the time the drive pulse is terminated and the coil short circuited at a point 15 which corresponds to a stable position of the rotor. Subsequent oscillations of the rotor about this stable position, induce a current in coil 5 as indicated at 15-18. The induced current is in a direction which is such as to oppose the rotor oscillations and acts as a braking force on the rotor.
