In the zero position one magnet 4 is opposite a driving coil 10 whilst the other two magnets 6, 8, which are of opposite polarity to the magnet 4, are opposite corresponding exciting coils 11, 12. The coils are carried by a fixed plate 13 of plastics material on which a printed circuit including a transistor 15 and diode 16 may be formed for driving the balance in known manner. The magnets may be complemented by a set on the opposite side of the coils Fig. 3 (not shown). The resultant exciting pulse may be made to switch the transistor into the fully conductive state when the battery voltage is low so that voltage changes are allowed for. In positions displaced 120‹ from the zero position, no exciting pulse is produced.

The hinged joint consists of two similar square boxes (12) containing an inner square box (13) with its sides at 45 deg. to the sides of the outer box. The spaces between the sides of the inner box (13) and the corners of the outer box (12) are filled with rubber cylinders (15). A third box (14) with rubber cylinders (16) fits inside the box (13). The two boxes (12) are mounted in tandem on the shaft (17) with two discs fitted between them. These discs are provided with tongues and grooves which limit the free angular rotation of one box (12) relative to the other. Any further relative rotation is elastically resisted by compression of the rubber cylinders (15) and (16).

The housing has an aperture and the rotatable and translatable input mechanism has a shaft positioned at least partially within the aperture and a manipulation structure coupled to the shaft.
