633,390. Grinding and polishing. McCLURE, J. D. July 23, 1947, No. 19819. [Class 60] In a grinding and polishing machine having a rotating grinding and polishing wire 29 which is reciprocated longitudinally through the workpiece, the wire is positively held at one end only and rotated at high speed, while the work-piece is rotated and oscillated continuously to vary the angle made by its axis with the axis of the wire. An electric or air turbine motor drives, through belting, a pulley 41 to rotate the wire 29, a pulley 30 to rotate the work-holder 28 and a pulley 8 to rotate, through change, gearing, a shaft 11. The latter carries a cam 12, actuating a lever 45 to reciprocate the wire, and an adjustable crank 15, connected by adjustable links 17, 19, to oscillate the workholder about pivots 23. The cam and crank are adjusted out-of-phase. The wire is guided at its upper end by felt pads in an adjustable bracket 37 and by a guide 48. Olived holes may be formed in watch-jewels, diamond-dies, &c. The Specification also refers to a machine in which the wire is held positively at both ends whilst being rotated and reciprocated through a rotating and oscillating work-piece.
