The procedure for measuring the angle through which a watch balance wheel turns between the two contacts with the escapement comprises an electro-optical system for measuring the amplitude of the balance wheel movement, and an electro-acoustic system for measuring the time taken for this movement. The angle is determined by calculation from the amplitude and time measurements. The equipment includes a support (1) and electro-acoustic unit (1) with a microphone (8) and an electronic circuit (9). A light source (10) co-operates with a photoelectric cell (12) and an electronic circuit (13). A processing unit (6) uses the signals from the two electronic circuits to determine the angle covered by the balance wheel between the two strikes of the escapement. Once this value is known, it is then possible to measure the amplitude of the balance wheel, with precision, even when the movement is inside the casing.

An electronic visible light sensor is employed to detect the presence or lack of sunlight. The simple, digital light/dark data from the sensor is fed to electronic circuits which control security and other devices dependent upon day and night status. These circuits are directed and controlled in turn by associated electronic circuits that gather data which measures the length of the solar night, that is, between dusk and dawn, and by deduction, the length of the day. Given that these time periods vary daily and in a regular fashion, the result will necessarily differ by a few minutes each and every day during the 365 day solar year. The resulting day/night time data is used to estimate, with say, a four to ten minute accuracy, taken against the Universal Coordinated Time System, to establish start/stop times, durations and cycles of security and other devices dependent upon the presence or lack of sunlight relative to UCT designated within the universally accepted twenty-four day. These results are fed to the security control circuitry to define control of data to security and other devices. 1. An electronic device and system which employs a light sensor and electronic circuits to measure the division of the solar day between day and night , estimate approximate midnight based upon the longitudinal location of said device and system , and uses such data to direct the output of said device and system to control other local , remote , interior and exterior , devices and systems for security , surveillance and annunciator purposes. A system to measure time based on the output of a plurality of clocks employs a common oscillator, rather than a frequency synthesizer. Phase differences between a plurality of clocks are measured by mixing the output from each clock with the output of the common oscillator and detecting the zero crossing of each of the resulting beat signals. The zero crossings are counted and used to start and stop time interval counters, which count the time intervals between zero crossings of the beat signals from different clocks. The output of one of the clocks is used to provide a time base. The output of the first clock is input to a divider, and the divided signal used to start the first of the time interval counters. The number of zero crossings of the divided signal are also counted so that the relative frequency of the common oscillator can be determined. The output of the divider can be synchronized with an external clock.

[Class 139] Apparatus for testing the running of watches, clocks, and other clockwork mechanisms, comprises a record surface mounted on a cylinder rotated at a constant speed, and a stylus moving at a constant speed parallel to the cylinder axis which records the ticks of the timepiece on the record surface. Preferably, the cylinder is rotated at a frequency equal to that of the ticks, so that if the timepiece is correct the ticks are recorded in a line parallel to the cylinder axis. Errors in the timing of a timepiece are then indicated by the divergence of the recorded line from this parallel and are read off directly against the calibrated record surface, for example, in seconds per day.
