The optical position detector is a flat luminescence optical wave guide with local photoelectric sensors enabling it to achieve the required high resolution. In a further embodiment, the identity of a pointing device is coded in the pulse sequence, enabling a clear distinction of several input devices.

The coverings may be used with capacitive and resistive touchscreen without reduction in performance, and to provide a means that eliminates unwanted smudging or fingerprints on the screen.

A computer mouse controller that employs a joystick-style cursor control mechanism. This cursor control mechanism employs a plurality of strain transducers affixed to a substrate to which a vertical mechanical post is attached. The upper free end of the post may be mechanically coupled to a shell shaped as a body of revolution such as a hemispheric-shaped shell. The mechanical coupling between the post and the ball-shaped shell may be a hard unyielding attachment or an intermediate compliant device such as a spring or rubber-like member to permit some limited movement of the ball-shaped shell relative to the post. The strain transducers are preferably arranged and connected in a bridge or half bridge configuration in two orthogonal axes. The application of a horizontally directed force to the free end of the post, imparts strain (tension or compression) to the transducers in the bridge depending upon the direction, thereby altering the impedance of the transducers along respective axes. A commensurate change in the output voltages increases the rate of cursor movement.

The reliability value and the location of the touch is provided to a software module. The software module uses the reliability value and an activity context to determine a confidence level of the touch. In an embodiment, the confidence level may include an evaluation of changes in the reliability value over time. If the confidence level for the touch is too low, it may be rejected.

A pen tool for use with a machine vision interactive input system comprising:an elongate body;a tip on the body; anda variable reflector disposed on the body, the variable reflector comprising a reflecting portion and an attenuating portion configured to control the amount of illumination reflected by the reflecting portion.2. The pen tool of claim 1 , wherein the variable reflector is positioned adjacent the tip.3. The pen tool of claim 1 , wherein the attenuating portion comprises a liquid crystal device.4. The pen tool of claim 3 , wherein the liquid crystal device comprises a polymer dispersed liquid crystal film positioned in an annular region between coaxial electrodes.5. The pen tool of claim 1 , wherein the transparency of the attenuating portion is proportional to an applied voltage.6. The pen tool of claim 1 , wherein the variable reflector further comprises a protective outer portion.7. The pen tool of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to switch the attenuating portion between differing levels of transparency.8. The pen tool of claim 7 , further comprising an actuator protruding from the tip claim 7 , the controller being configured to switch the attenuating portion between two or more levels of transparency in response to actuation of said actuator.9. The pen tool of claim 7 , further comprising a switch arrangement on said body in communication with the controller for selecting the differing levels of transparency.10.
