If the card is inserted with a fraudulent multicore ribbon cable connected to its chip contact points, complete closure of the slot is prevented so that the card cannot be read. Card support projections 18a are formed from the cover 14, and act in combination with an actuator which extends from the base 12 to draw the cover 14 towards the base 12 upon insertion of a card 70. As the cover 14 is drawn towards the base 12 a switch actuating projection 18a or 19 actuates a switch. The housing (2) includes a lock lever (13) having a latch projection (15) extending therefrom. The latch projection engages a corresponding recess (28) formed on the card holder (3) to lock the card holder and housing in an assembled condition. The twopiece construction allows the housing to be easily and automatically assembled to an underlying circuit board, and the sliding assembly of the card holder to the housing provides "self-cleaning" of the terminals during both assembly and removal of the card holder to the housing.

A card holder provides a balance display for an IC card utilized for a system for settling cash utilizing the IC card. A balance display is provided with the card holder-type body having a card slot provided in the body. A liquid-crystal display and at least one push-button are arranged on the body for user interface. A cover member is attached to the body via a hinge so that it can be opened or closed. When an IC card is inserted into the body and the push-button is pressed, the liquid-crystal display is lit and the current balance of currency is displayed on the liquid-crystal display. When the cover member is opened and the IC card is extracted, the display of the balance is switched to a blinking display. When a settlement is performed using the IC card, a microcomputer in the body can operate to displace the balance after the settlement as well as a paid or received amount, in addition to the previous balance before the settlement.

When Integrated Circuit Cards (ICC's) such as chip cards are configured to initiate electronic transactions, such as financial transactions, lapses in security can have severe consequences. Although global standardization means a high degree of interoperability, it also means that ICC's may be manufactured anywhere in the world. A frequent problem is that ICC's with older generation IC's remain in circulation, and/or some manufacturers of ICC's may use older technologies in new cards. Both of these policies may increase the security risks. In addition, ICC's can be cloned, and may be difficult to distinguish from genuine ICC's. The present subject matter describes an electronic card holder. In an example implementation, the electronic card holder includes a housing having a slot to receive an electronic card. A slidable frame in the housing is to hold the electronic card. The slidable frame has a stud fittable in a groove in the housing. The card holder includes a resilient element with one end being coupled to the housing and other end being coupled to the slidable frame. A thin card reader (TCR) designed to reduce card-not-present fraud, in credit card transactions, and other applications where security verification is needed in remote locations. The TCR is powered by external RF power, or through a battery. Further, the TCR uses energy from an energy harvester, which converts the mechanism energy used to insert the credit card into the TCR.
