A system and method of determining if a surface is printed or a mobile device screen

The spectral wave length signature of a surface 20 is acquired and compared to a known spectra and a scanner 32 scans the surface in at least one of an illumination and a non-illumination mode based on the comparison. If the spectrum signature corresponds to the known spectra the surface can be scanned in the illumination mode but if it cannot be determined to correspond to the known spectra then the surface is scanned in a 50/50 duty cycle between illuminated and no-illuminated modes. The wavelength spectrum may be acquired from captured light using a sensing element 34 and a diffractive element, coloured filters, or a two dimensional imaging lens having chromatic aberration. The surface may be printed or a mobile device screen and scanned using an image-based scanner 32 for features such as a barcode and the known spectra can include those of sunlight, incandescent light, white LED light, warm-white fluorescent light and RGB triple-peak emission spectra.

An "open face" of a disclosed adapter allows a cable for a scanner or other data link to extend from adjacent the base contact areas without a need to remove the extending cable, thereby enabling a cable-connected scanner to be moved and used while the data terminal is disposed in the adapter.

Several different embodiments are disclosed of a simple, compact or miniature bar code scanner which is capable of scanning in any one of several modes. In a preferred embodiment, the compact bar code scanner is used in a small housing mounted on an index finger of an operator such that the natural pointing direction of the index finger aims the scanner. In one embodiment, a high frequency flexural member, with a scanning mirror and permanent magnet mounted thereon, is supported by a low frequency flexural member. An x drive coil is positioned by the permanent magnet, and with an applied high frequency x drive signal, causes the high frequency flexural member, with the permanent magnet means and scanning mirror mounted thereon, to torsionally oscillate at the frequency of the x drive signal. A y drive coil is also positioned by the permanent magnet, and with an applied low freduency y drive signal, causes the low frequency flexural member to oscillate to cause low frequency y scanning of the scanning mirror, thereby resulting in a raster scan pattern. With an applied high frequency y drive signal, the y coil causes the high frequency flexural member to oscillate at a high frequency to cause high frequency y scanning of the mirror, thereby resulting in an omnidirectional scan pattern. In several disclosed embodiments, the present invention provides a mirrorless beam scanning unit mounted in a finger size ring wherein a light emitter such as a visible light diode is moved back and forth.

The invention is a method and apparatus for automatically reading bar code symbols. One aspect of the present invention concerns a method of reading bar code symbols using an automatic hand-holdable bar code symbol reading device. In general, the automatic bar code symbol reading device comprises a hand-holdable housing containing operative elements which provide an object detection field and a scan field each defined external to the housing. The method involves automatically detecting the presence of an object within the object detection field by sensing object sensing energy reflected off the object. In a preferred embodiment, the object sensing energy is IR radiation produced from an object sensing energy source disposed within the housing. In automatic response to the detection of the object within the object detection field, the hand-holdable device detects the presence of a bar code within the scan field using a laser beam produced within the housing. Then, in automatic response to the detection of a bar code in the scan field, the automatic hand-holdable bar code symbol reading device reads the detected bar code in the scan field by producing scan data signals from the detected bar code and thereafter collecting and analyzing the same. Another aspect of the present invention concerns a hand-holdable data collection device adapted for use with the automatic bar code symbol reading device to form a portable symbol reading system characterized by versatility and simplicity of use.

By virtue of the present invention, it is now possible to enable the detection of zero-crossings occurring in the second derivative of the analog scan data signals only when bar code element data has been detected, indicative that a bar code symbol has been scanned. This results in more accurate generation of digital output signals from the scan data signal processor.

An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a laser diode to create the scanning laser beam. Laser diodes are characteristically astigmatic, and when passed through a rotationally symmetric lens the beam typically forms a waist both in the x (scanning) direction and in the y (perpendicular) direction. The width of the beam envelope in the x direction is adjusted by means of a conventional lens. The width of the beam envelope in the y direction is adjusted by the use of a non-planar mirror, preferably a cylindrical mirror, as the rotating or oscillating element.

An optical scanning module has a metal base, a first circuit board mounted across one end of the metal base and a second circuit board mounted orthogonal to the first circuit board. The metal base supports a light emitter for producing a scanning beam and serves as a heat sink for the emitter. A flexible support attached to the metal base supports a mirror for oscillating motion. The module includes a drive mechanism, typically in the form of a permanent magnet and electromagnet, for producing reciprocal motion of the mirror. A detector included in the module senses light reflected from an indicia scanned by the beam. A flexible electrical cable connects the circuitry on the first and second circuit boards so that circuitry operates together to produce all signals necessary for operation of the scanner module and to process the electrical signals from the detector. Preferred embodiments include a flexible support consisting of a planar spring located between the mirror and one of the magnets. The components of the module are dimensioned so that the weight of the magnet balances that of the mirror. The invention also encompasses systems for scanning the beam simultaneously in two orthogonal directions at two different frequencies. This bi-directional scanning can produce a raster scan pattern for reading two-dimensional bar codes, or this scanning can produce a moving zig-zag pattern for reading truncated bar codes.

A scanner determines whether a target is a bar code symbol and, if so, whether that symbol is one-dimensional or two-dimensional. For two-dimensional symbols, the scanner aligns a scanning pattern with the symbol and expands the scanning pattern to reach only to the top and bottom edges of the symbol, not beyond. The scanner also has a microprocessor-control scanning engine that uses a coil to drive a scanning element and pick up feed back signals from the scanning element. A pulse-width-modulated regulator also provides fast and efficient operation for driving the coil. The scanning engine can also be designed to generate a pattern that precesses across the target, and a powerful interface to the scanning engine allows decoding and control logic to work efficiently with and independently of the scan engine.

Several different embodiments are disclosed of a simple, compact or miniature bar code scanner which is capable of scanning in any one of several modes. In a preferred embodiment, the compact bar code scanner is used in a small housing mounted on an index finger of an operator such that the natural pointing direction of the index finger aims the scanner. In one embodiment, a high frequency flexural member, with a scanning mirror and permanent magnet mounted thereon, is supported by a low frequency flexural member. An x drive coil is positioned by the permanent magnet, and with an applied high frequency x drive signal, causes the high frequency flexural member, with the permanent magnet means and scanning mirror mounted thereon, to torsionally oscillate at the frequency of the x drive signal. A y drive coil is also positioned by the permanent magnet, and with an applied low frequency y drive signal, causes the low frequency flexural member to oscillate to cause low frequency y scanning of the scanning mirror, thereby resulting in a raster scan pattern. With an applied high frequency y drive signal, the y coil causes the high frequency flexural member to oscillate at a high frequency to cause high frequency y scanning of the mirror, thereby resulting in an omnidirectional scan pattern. In several disclosed embodiments, the present invention provides a mirrorless beam scanning unit mounted in a finger size ring wherein a light emitter such as a visible light diode is moved back and forth.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure relates to battery powered hand-held data entry terminals wherein a peripheral module may contain an automatically operating full image reader and a wireless communication unit. The reader reads at least one full line of indicia and may comprise a laser bar code scanner or a flash type image reader. Preferably the reader has uniform resolution in orthogonal directions in the field of view so that an area image can be read at any arbitrary angular orientation and re-oriented as a stored digital image to a normalized orientation before decoding. The user interface may lie in a first longitudinally extended layer and the peripheral module may lie in a second longitudinally extended adjoining layer. In normal reading disposition of the automatic reader, the user interface may be close to its normal orientation for user interaction therewith to provide for smooth transitions between reading and user interaction operations. A hand grip portion preferably underlies the user interface for comfortable support thereof during manual actuations. The peripheral module and hand grip portion may be used entirely separately from the user interface and may have a wireless link with the user interface. The user interface may comprise a digitizer/display with resolution for accurately digitizing and displaying a person's signature. Signatures may also be digitized via an optical full image reader for immediate verification.

Method and apparatus for automatically reading bar code symbols is disclosed. One aspect of the present invention concerns a method of reading bar code symbols using an automatic hand-holdable bar code symbol reading device. In general, the automatic bar code symbol reading device comprises a hand-holdable housing containing operative elements which provide an object detection field and a scan field each defined external to the housing. The method involves automatically detecting the presence of an object within the object detection field by sensing object sensing energy reflected off the object. In a preferred embodiment, the object sensing energy is IR radiation produced from an object sensing energy source disposed within the housing. In automatic response to the detection of the object within the object detection field, the hand-holdable device detects the presence of a bar code within the scan field using a laser beam produced within the housing. Then, in automatic response to the detection of a bar code in the scan field, the automatic hand-holdable bar code symbol reading device reads the detected bar code in the scan field by producing scan data signals from the detected bar code and thereafter collecting and analyzing the same. Another aspect of the present invention concerns a hand-holdable data collection device adapted for use with the automatic bar code symbol reading device to form a portable symbol reading system characterized by versatility and simplicity of use.
