A multi-character continuous handwriting input method where a character is written on a touch unit and after an i th character is written, an (i+1) th character is written in an overlapping manner on the i th character. When a user is writing, it is determined whether a current stroke belongs to the i th character or (i+1) th character; if it is the (i+1) th character, the display color of the i th character is dimmed automatically, so that the user clearly sees the newly written character on a display screen. Multiple characters can be written continuously without pauses and when an (i+2) th character is written, the i th character disappears automatically from the screen, and the color of the (i+1) th character is dimmed automatically. Thus, the ability to continuously write multiple handwritten characters on a screen and the corresponding recognition and display processing significantly improves the input efficiency of handwritten text.

First and second ink points are received and an active Bézier approximation is computed based thereupon. Sequentially later in time that the first and second ink points, a third ink point is received. It is determined whether the third ink point adequately fits the active Bézier approximation. Where it is determined that the third ink point adequately fits, an updated active Bézier approximation is computed that includes the first, second and third ink points. Where it is determined that the third ink point fails to adequately fit, a different new Bézier approximation is computed that includes the third ink point but not the first and second ink points. Leveraging a GPU, a smoothed ink stroke based upon the Bézier approximation(s) is rendered.

OCR does not apply well to non-text-only diagrams, such as chemical structure diagrams. A method according to an embodiment of the present invention of interpreting a human-drawn sketch includes determining a local metric indicating whether a candidate symbol belongs to a certain classification based on a set of features. The set of features includes, as a feature, scores generated from feature images of the candidate symbol. Also included is determining a joint metric of multiple candidate symbols based on their respective classifications and interpreting the sketch as a function of the local and joint metrics. Sketches can be chemical composition, biological composition, electrical schematic, mechanical, or any other science- or engineering-based diagrams for which human-drawn symbols have well-known counterparts.

If the comparison yields a negative result, the application considers the elements as belonging to an object in recognition of the input. If the comparison yields a positive result, the application considers the elements as belonging to multiple objects in recognition of the input.

Method of connecting shapes on a display of a computer system

An apparatus for recognizing shapes characterized by a stroke grouper receptive to a plurality of strokes formed on a screen of a pen-based computer system; a shape recognition engine receptive to a stroke group produced by the stroke grouper; and a knowledge base coupled to the shape recognition engine, where the knowledge base includes, at a minimum, knowledge concerning closed polygons and closed curves. Preferably, the closed curves of the knowledge base include both circles and ellipses. A method for recognizing digitized shapes in a computer system includes the steps of receiving at least one user-initiated stroke; grouping the user-initiated stroke with related strokes to form a stroke group; and analyzing the stroke group to make a best-guess shape represented by the stroke group. Preferably, the method also looks for other shapes which are related to the best-guess shape and modifying at least one of the location, size, or shape of the best-guess shape to conform with the other shapes. The strokes are typically grouped when they are related in time, or space, or in both time and space. A method for recognizing and forming shapes includes the steps of: creating a live group including at least one live stroke; characterizing shape sides from the live group, where a shape side is either straight or curved; forming a polygon from the shape sides if all the shape sides are straight; forming an ellipse from the shape sides if all the shape sides are curved; and forming a composite curve from the shape sides if the shape sides are a mixture of straight sides and curved sides. The step of characterizing shape sides preferably includes the steps of: finding kinks in the live group; defining shape sides as segments between the kinks; and determining whether the shape sides are straight or curved.

Gaussian modeling is performed to isolate adequate chirographic prototype distributions in each space, and the mixture coefficients weighting these distributions are trained using a maximum likelihood framework. Decoding can be performed simply and effectively by accumulating the contribution of all relevant prototype distributions. Post-processing using a language model may be included.

Pre-recognition analysis on stroke characteristics such as the count, size and position of each stroke in real-time as it is drawn improves recognition accuracy. After each stroke, the set of strokes is weighted toward handwriting or gesture. The system uses a gesture threshold size to distinguish between gestures and handwriting. The system also uses the stroke count to distinguish between the two inputs, relying on the knowledge of the allowable number of strokes in a gesture. The count information may also be used in conjunction with the stroke size information to weight the set of strokes between gestures handwriting. Once the stroke size crosses a gesture vs. text size threshold, the result is weighted toward gestures. By examining the `white space` between strokes and the juxtaposition of the strokes, a gesture vs. text determination can be made with high accuracy.

Abstract of the Disclosure A difference vector indicating movement of a pen between two adjacent sampled points is divided into macro movement and micro movement components. The macro and micro components are coded independently of each other so as to provide effective coding. In the case of coding the difference vector, the magnitude of the difference vector is coded in accordance with the types of zones (zone number k) and relative pel address within the zone. In order to improve the coding efficiency, a zone number difference is used instead of the zone number. Furthermore, the direction of the difference vector is expressed by a quadrant which includes this difference vector. In order to further improve the coding efficiency, a quadrant number difference is used instead of the quadrant number.

A method and process provides structure recognition to a node-link diagram formed by a plurality of digital ink strokes drawn on a canvas of an electronic device by an input device. The method and process include grouping related strokes into multiple hypotheses reflecting structure interpretations of the strokes in a group. Confidence scores are computed for the multiple hypotheses based on local evidence regarding the strokes of the stroke groups and surrounding strokes. Constraints are applied among the hypotheses, and a collectively high scoring assignment of accept/reject values of the hypotheses are determined under the applied constraints. The hypotheses with collectively high scoring assignments are accepted as a representation of the node-link diagram, where structure information is provided to the strokes of the node-link diagram, making the node-link diagram electronically editable.

The invention aims at recognition of a handwritten input character on-line with quite high accuracy. The method of on-line handwritten input character recognition of the invention is characterized in that ordinary strokes and transition strokes and/or s-e strokes of a handwritten input character sampled on-line are compared with ordinary strokes and transition strokes and/or s-e strokes of dictionary's characters previously registered in a dictionary and the character corresponding to the handwritten input character is recognized on the basis of the result of the comparison. Otherwise, when the dictionary's character most similar to the input character corresponds to a preset character, the handwritten input character is identified by using characteristic features of the corresponding character. Thus, by comparing ordinary strokes and transition strokes and/or s-e strokes of a handwritten input character sampled on-line with ordinary strokes and transition strokes and/or s-e strokes of dictionary's characters previously registered in a dictionary and recognizing the character corresponding to the handwritten input character on the basis of the result of the comparison, a handwritten input character which was difficult to recognize only by means of ordinary strokes can be recognized with high accuracy.

A method and system for cleaning handwriting for redisplay of the handwriting or for improved recognition accuracy is provided. The cleanup system receives handwriting that has been digitized. The cleanup system then analyzes the handwriting to identify strokes that satisfy a cleanup criterion. When a stroke has been identified as satisfying some cleanup criteria, the cleanup system cleans up the handwriting based on the detected criteria. In this way, the cleanup system generates handwriting that may have a more visually pleasing appearance to the reader.
