A device and system of information exchange for an educational toy is disclosed. Inside an external shell is placed a small computer. The Device interacts through auditory and visual responses, and accepts input through buttons, RFID accessories, smart cards and speech. The Device communicates with other like devices through a wireless Bluetooth connection. The Device receives information updates via a Bluetooth dongle that plugs into the end user's computer. When the Device is synchronized with the end user's computer, new information is pushed to (and stored in) the Device's internal computer. An electronic book is provided with a soundtrack, to which a reader can listen while reading the electronic book. Playback of the soundtrack is synchronized with the visual display of the electronic book. Audio cues are associated with different points in the text and these cues are dynamically played back in synchronization with the visual display of the electronic book based on the interaction of the user with the electronic book. The dynamic playback involves editing and playing an audio cue so that it has a duration that is based on a prediction of the duration of the portion of the electronic book with which the cue is synchronized. When the system starts playing an audio cue, it predicts when the next audio cue should start. The current cue is played for predicted duration and a transition to the next audio cue is initiated at an appropriate time.

A system and method for training a student employ a simulation station that displays output to the student and receives input. The computer system has a rules engine operating on it and computer accessible data storage storing (i) learning object data including learning objects configured to provide interaction with the student at the simulation system and (ii) rule data defining a plurality of rules accessed by the rules engine. The rules data includes, for each rule, respective (a) if-portion data defining a condition of data and (b) then-portion data defining an action to be performed at the simulation station. The rules engine causes the computer system to perform the action when the condition of data is present in the data storage. For at least some of the rules, the action comprises output of one of the learning objects so as to interact with the student.
