Systems and methods are disclosed to enable the creation and the display of spatio-temporal dithered images. Embodiments include techniques that use color-shifting and luminance. In one embodiment, adjacent pixels are color-shifted with respect to each other and the color values of the adjacent pixels are temporally alternated with color values of pixels in the group. In another embodiment, the luminance of group of adjacent pixels is determined and the luminance of the group is made more homogenous spatially and temporally by distributing color variations over a larger number of pixels so as to reduce the luminance difference between the pixel with the least luminance and the pixel with the greatest luminance. Individual color components (e.g., red, green, blue) may also be separated and used so that the color-shifts associated with each color component may be simultaneously present in different pixels.

This invention provides a calibration system and method for multi-unit display systems without a need for switching the system input resolution/configuration of the display system while calibrating. This serves to avoid carrying out a re-synchronization step. As such, this system and method allows for increases speed and reduced likelihood of failure. This system and method also corrects the display system by providing an arrangement that employs a minimum of required changes so as to avoid any changes that can consequently affect the output image of the display system. Calibration of the system of display units occurs free of any changes to the input resolution and this resolution is maintained in a manner that resists change unless specifically required. Moreover, this system and method enables a resolution for the overall system that differs from the sum of the input resolutions of the discrete, individual display units in the collection.

The sub-pixel rendering techniques disclosed with gamma adjustment can be optimized for a display device gamma to improve response time, dot inversion balance, and contrast because gamma correction and compensation of the sub-pixel rendering algorithm provides the desired gamma through sub-pixel rendering. These techniques can adhere to any specified gamma transfer curve.

An electronic device, according to various embodiments of the present invention, comprises: a display comprising a first region exposed on the front surface of the electronic device and a second region accommodated within the electronic device or exposed to the exterior of the electronic device; at least one sensor for detecting a change in the display structure of the display; at least one display processor for controlling the driving of the display; and a main processor, wherein the main processor identifies a display area in which image data is to be displayed on the display, according to the change in the display structure of the display on the basis of sensing information transmitted from the at least one sensor, determines a frame rate of the at least one display processor on the basis of the change in the display area, and drives the display at the determined frame rate.

An image converter (35) converts an image rendered at a given vertical synchronous frequency into an image compatible with the specification of a display (60). A frame memory (47) holds the image converted by the image converter (35) by switching a plurality of buffers. A display (60) controller (50) selects one of the buffers in accordance with the vertical synchronous frequency of the display (60), and scans out the image from the frame memory (47) accordingly. A switch instruction issuing unit (14) issues a frame buffer switch instruction for designating a frame buffer to scan out from subsequently, in synchronization with the vertical synchronous frequency of the display (60), instead of immediately after the execution of an image converting process by the image converter (35).
