A method of driving a display uses first ( 4 ) and second ( 5 ) illumination cycles of the display. In each cycle, a first set of pixels ( 1′ ) is illuminated with a first color (R, G) and a second set of pixels ( 2′ ) is illuminated with a second color (G, B). The first and second colors of the two cycles together include at least three colors (R, G, B) for forming an image. This method provides a sequential drive scheme, in that at least two cycles are used with different color properties. However, each cycle uses at least two different colors, so that each cycle is not a single color across the whole display area. In this way, the color sequence is alternated spatially as well as temporally.

A digital screen rendering resolution adjustment can allow users who are conventionally dependent upon corrective lenses to view the digital screen to, after the resolution adjustment, view the contents of this screen with 20×20 vision (considered normal vision), without the use of these corrective lenses. A linear algebraic transform (performing essentially the inverse of the Lensmaker's Equation) can be applied and enact matrix manipulation that when rendering the graphical display to autocompensate for a viewer's visual abnormalities, can result in a distorted screen that is equivalent to the inverse of a corrective lens prescription. A screen rendering customization to autocompensate for a user's visual impairment can be applied for each eye in 3D capable devices due to the inherent nature of 3D to display separate images per eye. A unique algebraic transform matrix manipulation can be performed for each of the two images and can provide a more exact corrective lens prescription rendering simulation than for single image rendering for a display.

One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for generating and transmitting video frame data from a graphics processing unit (GPU) to a color field sequential display device. A frame buffer image comprising per-pixel packed color channels is transformed to a frame buffer image comprising regions corresponding to the color channels with vertical blanking regions inserted between color sub-field regions. Each region of the transformed frame buffer image is sequentially transmitted to the color field sequential display device for display of the corresponding color channel. Backlight illumination for each color channel is controlled by the GPU for temporal alignment with display of each color channel during a vertical blanking interval. The GPU may compensate an individual pixel's color channel value based on a corresponding previous color channel value in order to minimize crosstalk between neighboring color fields.

When 3D display is performed, part of a plurality of pixels perform desired color display and the other part of the plurality of pixels perform black display. Thus, as compared to the case where all of a plurality of pixels perform desired color display, the occurrence of crosstalk can be suppressed. A plurality of pixels which perform desired color display are changed depending on the display state. Therefore, as compared to the case where a plurality of pixels which perform desired color display are fixed when 3D display is performed, the display device can have a longer period until display change in a pixel becomes obvious (a longer lifetime) and variations in display among the plurality of pixels can be reduced.

In one embodiment, a timing control part determines an average grayscale value for each to be displayed image from the received image data and the timing control part correspondingly controls an open time for simultaneously opening the left eye shutter part and the right eye shutter part of the shutter glasses according to the determined average grayscale value of the image data.

The method further includes, after scanning a row section, controlling the backlight of the row section to be turned on and then turned off until the same row section of a next image starts to be scanned, and repeating until all images are scanned. The method thus provides a crosstalk-free 3D effect and reduces power consumption of the backlight source.
