If the event cannot be identified locally then the signal may be sent for comparison to a remote server where additional events are stored. The monitor can be used to determine the activities 706 of an elderly person living alone to check if they are following regular routines 708 such as sleeping and eating patterns but also to determine how much human contact they have by identifying their speech pattern and that of others 710. The tone, level and animation in a voice may also be indentified as well as general movement patterns possibly by identifying footsteps and doors opening or closing.
